| Greetings and question: Is my baby a yorkie/ Hello there, My name is Madi and I was given a tiny ball of fluff on Valentine. He was about 9 weeks old and the tiniest thing on earth. I am used to large dogs (Crapathians and Cucasians that weight 80-100kg) so this is like an alien experience to me. After getting used to the idea of having such a tiny breed i decide to join the forum and ask some questions. I was told that he was a purebred yorkie and that his dad has a pedigree certificate but his mom does not. I just recently got my hands on some pictures of his parents and now i am starting to doubt his origin. HIs mom is said to be 2.3 and dad 2.7 kg, which is under 7lb. He is now 3 month ofd and weighs about 1.080 kg (2.4lb) and i expect him to grow, a lot. He seems quite tall to me, yet i know nothing of the breed so please tell me if he is a yorkie or not. It does not matter i do not plan to use him for breeding , yet i would have liked to take him for some shows since i go every year with the other big dogs and its quite fun and he need to be a purebred dog for them. |

| Thank you for your reply. Well as I said I have big dogs and all have big names like Lord, King, Deus. So I thought he would feel left out so he became a god and his name is Odin. I am really scared that i will screw it over with him since i am raising him like the big guys and they need a very firm hand. He is the only dog that ever "talked" back to me. I guess i am up for a very demanding 16 years or so, yet he is the best. I love the breed and would appreciate any good first time owner tips. |

| Odin is very cute and looks like a yorkie to me, but don't shows require AKC registration as proof of purity before they can be shown? As for raising him like a big dog, I think there is a vast difference on how to train yorkies as opposed to big dogs. I would suggest readin up on the training section of this forum for pointers. Yorkies will talk back and also act out if not trained in the right way. Good luck with training and welcome to yorkietalk.

| I also have my first little one after having big dogs. Training is basically the same except harder. They are not as easy to please as my big dogs and picky on their treats. My 6 month old has been to obedience training and still is having difficulty with sit stay. It is just so hard for them to stay still. Behavior wise I treat him the same as my big dogs. Just remember these little guys need lots of patience and repition. They have tons of energy so play time and later walks are very important. Potty training is more difficult. They have small bladders so start with pad training. Most of us use some time of enclosure or x-pen for our fluffs. This forum is great to help with any questions. I am learning a lot about taking care of these little ones. |

| Well in some European shows they allow it. His father is a purebred and is registered in the European Association. His mom is also somewhat pure and we could do a genetic test and see the line, yet sometimes you can just enlist him and he participates and the experts decide if he is up to standard and give him a sort of accreditation. I am not that interested in that, i only do it 3 times a year in the summer for fun. There are loads of doggies and the big ones love to play and have fun since its outdoors. I hope Odin will like it too if not well he will be a well bread lap dog for me to spoil. |

| Welcome to YT. I think you have an adorable yorkie. I trained my yorkies in the same way I trained bigger dogs we have had in the past. Positive reinforcement to me is always the best way. I have not found the harder to train in fact when it came to housebreaking and such it has been just the opposite. Laddy was completely pad trained at 10 weeks and Kyra at 13 weeks. Outside trained at 12 and 15 weeks. Yorkies love to please their people so lots of praise I believe is the key and if they misbehave a simple show of displeasure such as a sad face and placing them on the floor and walking away for a period of time seems to work best with mine. I have when they seriously misbehaved over and over placed them in time out in their crates in another room which I know some disagree with but it has worked with mine. Best wishes with your little cutie.
