| Finally Found a breeder! I've been researching for months, and now I found a breeder...But wondering if this breeder is legitimate...theu are not on the list of ytca..their dogs are CH line pedigree or CH sired by Crosswinds Pied Piper of Rose Hill...I dont know what that means...here's some questions for the breeder... To you - Are you USDA licensed? About parents - Can I know more about their age, temperament and show history? - Do you have registration papers of them? can you explain their pedigree? - how many litters do you have a year? - Have they been tested for any defects or genetic problems ? About puppies - What's the puppy weight now? and expected adult weight? - How are you going to potty train them?(litter box, wee wee pad, or outside) - Do you have shot records? - What type of food are you currently feeding the puppy? Will you provide me with a week’s worth of food for the puppy? - What kind of instructions will you provide me for when I take the puppy home? - What potential genetic problems are inherent in your dogs? - What type of contract, conditions or guarantees are involved in the sale of the your puppy? Do you have a written contract and health guarantee? Look for a health guarantee that is more then just a few days. anything else I need to ask??? |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I figured I would share my questions that I came up with to ask breeders interviewing for a puppy. I hope this helps Yorkie Questions 1.)Can I see the sire (dad) and dam (mom)?Always try to see the sire and dam. Especially the dam. Ask if you can hold her. Run your hand under her and make sure she has boobies. Sometimes a breeder will show you a small pretty bitch and say it's the dam and that pup hasn't had a litter. Just a little trick that might help you out. 2.) How long have you been breeding yorkies? 3.) Where does the puppy spend its time during the day and is she being socialized? and the dogs? 4.)How often do you breed your females? 5.)How many litters do you have a year? 6.) Do you require your puppies to be spayed or neutered? Do you give full registration or limited registration? 7.) What age do you let your puppies go to their new homes? 8.) Do you offer support after the puppy has come home? 9.)What is the price of your puppies? (note: usually males are cheaper than females- however, dogs should not vary in cost depending on their size) 10.)How much do the sire and dam weigh? 11.) Food....... what kind, how much, where available? Most breeders will send a few days’ supply home w/you till you can locate your own source. 12.) Ask if the pups have been vet checked and is he current on all he shots? 13.) Ask the name of the vet and call for a reference. Try to make a vet appointment the day you pick the puppy up, then if anything is wrong with the puppy, you won't have time to fall in love with it if you have to bring it back. You'll be able to judge what kind of person breeder is when you meet and start asking questions. 14.) Does the breeder have references of previous dog owners and is she willing to provide them to you? 15.)Have you had any genetic conditions in your lines? (ie. liver shunt, luxating patella - which can be genetic, but not always) 16.)Ask the breeder for a history on the sire and dam of the puppy. Reputable breeders will screen breeding pair for any genetic deficiencies. 17.) Ask the breeder if they will guarantee a full refund of purchase price in writing on the bill of sale if this dog develops liver shunt, legg perthes, or congestive heart failure within the first 5 years of it's life? 18.) Can I have copies of the health clearances? Many breeds are prone to certain genetic conditions. The breeder should offer health clearances--documentation from an independent agency, such as the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals or the Canine Eye Registration Foundation--that the parent and grandparent dogs were tested for hereditary problems. *see health entry for a list of medical issues to look for. If I am missing anything please send me a pm. I would add it to the list.

| I think this is a great reference list. I recently was contacting breeders for my own search and settled on one from Iowa. Though I did not ask all these questions but it is good to know that I can still ask what I didnt ask or we discussed w/o asking the question in general. Thanks YT for the useful information. |

| Do these people show dogs them selves or do they only have dogs whose ancestry have champions? If they do show then ask what dog clubs they do belong to. Most areas have local dog clubs. Many of those clubs sponsor dog shows and matches. Most reputable people who show/breed are active in their local clubs. If they are legit they should be able to show you a lot of documentation of their show history and pedigrees. You do want to know what kind of testing they are doing on their breeding stock to make sure they are not passing on genetic defects of any kind. References from other dog people. Judges as well as others who have purchased from them. Vet references can be helpful if you know who you are dealing with. If at all possible go tot he place and see their set up before making a decision. |

| The lady you are talking about lives just a few blocks from me. She has a beautiful home and her dogs live in the house as part of the family. She does have a nursery in one bedroom. I use to go visit her "Minnie-Mouse" who fully grown was only 2 pounds and so outgoing and playful. When I was looking for my third Yorkie, she did not have puppies at that time. She was the first person I went to. Her dogs are all healthy and very happy and spoiled. She has even flown in CH males in order to continue a strong healthy line. I can't say enough about her and her program. If you come up, give me a call and maybe we can have lunch and visit. I did PM you.
