| ![]() By a series of miracles Cali killed the hawk - shook it until she broke its neck, but wouldn't let go of it. When it pounced down on her she was fast and spun around came up under it and grabbed it by the neck right up under the beak, she then started shaking it so hard that sometimes he legs came off the ground, the hawk fought her hard right up to the end. The hawk weighed in at around 5.5 pounds - Cali is 3 lbs, 14 ounces - all Terrier apparently! I live in a subdivision right in the middle of town. After this incident got around people in the neighborhood said that several cats had gone missing in the area. The fish and wildlife officer compared Cali to a small rabbit or squirrel that hawks will go after. The only damage Cali sustained were some wicked scratches from those huge talons. The hawks never got them into her. Like is said, a series of miracles worked in her favor . The fish and wildlife guy is Cali's buddy now! Comes by to visit her from time to time. He and I had the discussion that if it ever happened again I would serve the time ( can be up to a 12 months) and pay the fine ( around here is $10,000 to $15,000) if it came to that and they could just put me down as felon, cuz if it comes between my furbaby and a hawk, the hawk is toast ! They ( fish and wildlife) took the hawk and examined/ autopsied it. That is how I knew it died of a broken neck. There really was no blood anywhere other than on Cali's back.

| ![]() Jay Sure you saying you can't even kill something endangered if its going after your pet???? I thought there were some exemptions....I've learned something new every day on here!

| ![]() Gross, squirrel guts hanging on the lamp, lol. I love hawks, but hate that they make it impossible for us to let the doggies enjoy our backyard.

I can imagine Gracie doing the same if she had the chance. She has quite a temper with her toys. When she gets playing with them she shakes the daylights out of them as she growls at them. I have never seen an animal shake a toy with so much vigor. I am amazed her neck can tolerate the vigorous shaking motion. They are tenacious little things. Your little girl must have gotten really ticked off at that hawk! | |

| ![]() LOL at that image that Bobbi has in her head. I'm no Mary Poppins but it's sort of close to the image. Here is a couple of pics of Mandie in her orange vest (and yes..this is actually a Halloween Pumpkin costume, turned inside out lol) ![]() ![]()

| ![]() Cali is so mild mannered, never any aggression, so I was stunned - never thought she could do that - I think nature's instincts kicked in! When I tried to get her away from the hawk at the end, she snapped at me for trying to pick her up. I think the adrenalin was really flowing. She has never snapped at anyone. I think I held her for two days solid!

| ![]() Yep, I think that was the message she was sending! The fact that I was also going ballistic probably didn't help either. ![]()

| ![]() Thanks, Bobbi. I think so ![]() My hubby makes fun of me for putting that pumpkin costume on her inside out. She knows everytime we go out that she has to put it on and she knows the phrase, "Let's put on your pumpkin." She'll cower/kneel down to let me strap it on. lol

| ![]() Hawks and birds of prey are very scary, we live in the country so mine are never outside alone or off leash. We have owls, hawks, and other big birds. I would be almost as afraid of posting my address and map to my home on a public online forum also. ![]() ![]() ![]()
