Oh Mr Hawk So this morning DH and I went to try my new .38 Smith and Wesson snub nose. We came home, pulled into the driveway and a big ol hawk was sitting on the street light right in front of our house munching on a squirrel! As we pulled in and stopped he grabbed his lunch and flew away!! He left a lovely string of squirrel guts hanging off the light post! This hawk was so big- probably one of the biggest I have seen here! I always see a hawk sitting on the rock behind my house, I wonder if this is him? We have about 10 acres of land behind our house.. Between the hawks, owls, coyotes I have seen it all, but never this close!! Last night we also heard a pack of coyotes killing something!! |
Scary for your little ones! |

We have to be careful at night with the boys. There are some huge owls that like to patrol our back yard. One night an owl flew past DH, right at eye level while he was out with the Boys. We make sure that one of us is with them outside at night at all times! |
We live out in the woods also....which is why Lambeau goes out to do his business leashed. Nitetime is especially scary because of the owls. I swear they 'hoot' to each other that the next potential 'meal' is outside again! Thank goodness we haven't had a close encounter yet!! |
I am on the other side of the fence. I am a fan of the raptors. I get excited to see them around. They are beneficial to our Eco system . They keep down rats, mice and snakes. Especially in the country areas. And I live next to a dairy farm surrounded by corn fields. |
Just cannot understand why so many people are having hawk problems. I live in a rural area back in the woods. We have about every animal known to the north east including coyotes, foxes, owls and the occasional bear or wild cat that passes through. We have never had an attack on pets in the area and rarely have issues where we see attacks in nature. I think it is because there is enough wildlife to sustain the predators and they don't bother the human zones that are scattered around the area. We do take precautions with our pets and the ranchers and farmers keep a pretty close watch on their own stock. Nature can appear cruel from a human prespective but there is a very real balance in how it all works. As long as those predators keep their distance I stay out of what they are doing. The last time we had a really big hawk come into the area a flock of smaller birds chased the big bird away every time it landed in a tree. Within a couple of weeks it was gone. |

I am on both sides of the fence. I love how magestic hawks, owls and all raptors are. And, I agree that they do us a great service. However, I still don't want one circling my yard overhead scoping out my baby. And I'll do whatever it takes to keep an attack from happening. I just went yesterday and bought some mirrors. Going to give this a try now. Although, none have actually sooped down at Mandie, they have obviously targetted her to see if they could. Low and right on top of her. I have all kinds of squirrels and birds and I know they attract them and for the most part, sustain them. But I can tell when Mandie is in the crosshairs. Why are we seeing so many more instances these days? Easy. Population expansion taking over what used to be plentiful wilderness for them. |
I love all birds and used to feed them and enjoy them, but since Cali's attack I have a whole different perspective. The live and let live thing goes like this - this is her back yard and I pay for it! We had to go through the vet bills, antibiotics ( hawks have nasty beaks and talons) and the local fish and wildlife folks (they are a protected species, and although she killed it I had to prove that I did not) with this incident. At 3 pounds and 14 ounces she fought for her life - if you ever have the misfortune to witness that with your baby your thoughts will realign I assure you. |

Hopefully they will just take care of the rodents for you and stay away from your precious! |

The people that lived here before told us they were outside with their min pincher and chi- they said a Coyote came and snatched the Min Pincher. I have never seen a Coyote down here over the fence, but then again Peanut is never out there without a leash.. |

Do you live kind of out on the edge of the \'burbs or in the country? This is so scary! What if a little Yorkie or Chi had gotten out, was on the run and that big old hawk saw that little thing? Somebody would be missing their beloved companion and wouldn\'t even know unless somebody saw it! This is really awful to think those things are up there like drones hunting for little creatures. Don\'t get me wrong, I know they have a perfect right to live and eat and enjoy life but when they come where people live - SCARY!!! |
