| what to do with a crate restricted dog who hates toys? We are more than halfway through her 6 week confinement for leg surgery. She is feeling pretty swell and wants to jump around putting weight on her leg, which is fine n small doses.. Unfort. she wants more action, less sleep..I have to move her from her puppy apt. crate to the small one when she gets crazy. If I go out, which is hardly ever these days I have to put her in the smaller crate and I get a nice pee present when I get back. I dont get mad about those..even though I know she can hold it for more than 1.5 hours.. Even tranquilzers from the surgeon dont seem to slow her down for more than an hour tops. Jess has NO interest in toys whatsoever. None. sniffs it and moves on..I tried frozen kongs (eats through it in 5 mins) hide the kibble in what hand (she gets sick of the game quick) animal planet (wont even look) treat training..hit or miss...she cant play fetch or anything that makes her walk or run.. Im being VERY cautious as if this doesnt work..well lets not go there..it will work..im like the moving police..."No" is a word she is used to now..(for jumping) any ideas?? help......................... |

| If you can't be there to hold her yourself, I would hire someone to come in and sit with her or give her some sedative as long as someone is around to observe her.

| Maybe you could use a sling under her belly to help hold her up a little so she's not putting her full weight on her leg, and then just walk her around outside. You can also give her Rescue Remedy when she goes back in the crate, along with a tiny beef femur bone (that's been boiled and the marrow removed) to chew on. I'd take her outside at least every hour or two. Not getting any exercise at all just isn't good.

| Can you get a heavy coat or thick sweater on her without hurting her and turn down the temperature in the room so she won't overheat wearing it? Or one of those really fancy dog dresses with all the big skirt? Would something like that be safe with her post-op wound? You might ask the vet if there is a danger of a big-skirted dress. Some dogs just zone out when dressed in heavy or restrictive clothing and will just lie there. When I put his raincoat on him, Tibbe will just lie down and give up! It sounds awful but that with some medication that might help keep her quieter so that leg can heal. As awful as it is, you have to find some things that are going to seem pretty tough maybe in order to keep her from maybe being weak or lame in that leg. I'm looking on the Internet but so far haven't found much for dogs that don't love chewing and toys. What about an Elizabethan collar? Would that make her just give up and lie down? Some dogs do that with those on? Can you try more than one kong and use those for her meal?

| Im here all the time...So she gets held alot although I cant do it all day. i have four kids and a business. In fact, DH is holding her now. My surgeon wants no exercise other than potty. None... I did buy her a sweater thats shes wearing and it actually helps with the anxiety. Shes a shaker.. She wore an elizabethian collar first two weeks (well actually three because I was afraid to take it off after the vet said i could) I still put it on her at night as shes a licker..it never bothered her in the least.. where would i get a beef femur bone? (Im one of those people that watches her eat every meal and treat so she doesnt choke lol) I was worried that if she ever jumped out of the sling or it bent her leg ..oh boy.. I cant use a kong for her meal as she has developed an aversion to drinking water out of a bowl so I give her 3oz of water mixed in her breakfast and 3oz at dinner (she eats/drinks the whole thing) god , i sound crazy..sorry I just feel so bad for her...I was on bed rest for 6 weeks when I was preg with my triplets so I know what its like. At least I had TV.... oh and shes not a chewer..unless it has food on it! Last edited by kimp5; 03-07-2013 at 04:48 PM. |

| Can the vet give her a sedative? It should help zone her out some. Poor baby - I feel for her. I know this isn't easy on mommie either!

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | One of those baby swadler slings or a hobo type purse/bag might work so she doesn't fall out. You could keep her busy with raw hide, it keeps my dogs busy for hours. Try some ice cubes too.

| How do you know when she's in pain? If she's so restless, it could be from anxiety secondary to pain. I'd give her her pain meds and sedative as prescribed or this poor baby might undo her surgical correction.

| What about puzzle toys where she'd have to work to get the treats out? Mojo has a puzzle ball that I put his kibble into. I know he'd be able to roll it around enough to get the treats out even in a small crate.

| Rescue remedy did not work for Jackson, my Maltese but a thunder shirt did the trick. He freezes when I put it on him - actually, it is funny to see him stand in place like a statue.

| This is Rescue Remedy: Bach Rescue Remedy Dog Cat Flower Essences I gave my anxious girl 3 drops 1/2 hour before going on trips or to the Vet. and it worked beautifully. Beef femur bones can be bought, very inexpensively, at most super markets or local butcher shop. They can slice the size you want. I buy the 1 to 2 inch thick. They can't splinter those or eat them at all.
