| What should I use to clean Amy's ears? Seems like Amy's ears are always dirty. She is scratching at them with her paws a lot during the day. I bought some ear cleaning pads from Petsmart but I am not sure they are working that well. She is going to get groomed next Friday but was wondering if there is something else I could be using. Thanks |

| I keep my boys' ears clean by 1) combing ear hair daily with a flea comb that has teeth set really closely together. The flea comb also removes loose hair and keeps it from clogging the ear canal. 2) Using pads for the ear flap and visible areas whenever they look dirty 3) Using a liquid cleanser like All Systems Ear so Fresh or Vet Solutions Ear Cleaner. Anything that has a drying agent in it to dry moisture and remove dirt and wax. I use this after baths. Have a vet check Amy's ears if she has any skin redness, black or dark brown gunk in her ear, head shaking with the scratching, or pungent odor.

| If you find any brown colored substance in the ear you need to make a trip to the vet. Brown can indicate either ear mites or fungus. Fungus forms when there is any dampness in the ear, like water left over from a bath. It can cause itching and eventually a painful infection. The vet will give you drops to put in the ears for at least 10 days. Mites also create a brown substance but sometimes it is so deep in the ear you cannot see it until it gets severe. Frequent itching of the ear by the dog means something is not right and really should be checked out. |

| I use a 4 parts water / 1 part vinegar, put it on cotton ball and wipe ear, it kills yeast and bacteria. I do this after teddy bath about once a week, he has floppy ears so increase chance of ear infections. |

| I use witch hazel on a cotton ball for Sam's ears. Witch hazel is a natural astringent and won't overly dry the ear or burn like alcohol can. The vet also gave the method a thumbs up.

| We also use Epi-otic after baths which I believe also contains a drying agent. |

| Thanks to everyone. She is seeing the doctor this Friday but will try some of these things you told me about till then. I do have a bottle of Ear Cleanser + PS Solution that we got from the vet when Sassy was alive. She always had problems with her ears and got infections in them. Will use that also. Don't have any cotton balls but have Coets that I use on my face and will cut them in half and use them till we get cotton balls. Thanks for helping. |

| Try not to put anything in her ears for at least a couple of days before you go to the vet. It will interfere with them being able to make an accurate diagnosis. When the ear canal is wet from drops, etc. they cannot see into the canal well because of the light reflecting off the liquid. It also interferes with lab tests. |

| We use Vet Solutions (Ear Cleaner Solution). Especially after a bath. Maybe she has an ear infection? I would check in at the vet's.
