With my Yorkie boys, I have never put collars because I'm afraid my guys would hurt themselves with the collar. There is the option of breakaway collars, like for cats, but if my boys got out of the house, they would probably break the collars off on something right away.

Our tags can be attached to the D-ring on harnesses, which my boys wear for walking.

You can also put the collar lose enough to slip off if they got stuck that's what I do.

That works for some dogs, but it can also be a danger for others. There have been members here whose dogs got the collars stuck in their mouths creating a life-threatening situation.

As I wrote, I'm torn because my head tells me dogs should always have tags on.

You do what you can Kristin. If you're not comfortable, you're not comfortable.

Personally, I'm the cotton owning breakaway collar type. (X12 for easy washing since he wears them 24/7) They've been good to us, easy cleaning (I change his collar after each bath) and it gives me piece of mind. He'll have info on him when needed, and he won't choke like a regular collar. However, I love love love my red BB collar. We use it whenever we go visiting because its just so sharp and pretty. And he's under my constant supervision should he get in trouble I can get it right off.

my bella is microchiped but i just put her tags on her harness she wears it all the time i keep her hair short so it wont matt. she use to wear a collar but it both together looked to bulky for me.her harness is very thin so it doesn't bother her at all.
