Love Hi-Introducing Myself!

Hi Everyone - I have been coming to Yorkie Talk for a number of years for advice and thought that the time has come to become an active member. I really value this forum as a place to go for advice. A little about myself - I have been a yorkie mama for about 9 years. My husband and myself are also great German Shepherd Lovers and about 11 years ago we purchased a purebred show quality German Shepherd and she was the love of our entire family and neighborhood. Our Shepherd bonded with my husband and went everywhere with him (including work everyday). I wanted my own "lap dog" and our vet recommended a Yorkie because of their big dog personality and she felt that this little bundle would fit in with our Shepherd. So about 9 years ago I brought Cosmo home. He is a 6 1/2 lb traditional yorkie that took over our hearts and our home. We bred and raised shepherd pups but after 6 years we lost our shepherd to a stroke and it broke our hearts - but Cosmo was their and he was a great help in our therapy - even though he also had lost a good friend. After a bit of time we brought another Show quality Shepherd but to after a couple of years we lost her to a very rare seizure problem. We were heartbroken and so was Cosmo - SO that is how we brought Zoey into our home. Cosmo was so lost without a friend at home and we were to heartbroken to bring another Shepherd home at that time so I decided to get Cosmo a little girl yorkie as a companion. So 2 years ago I went back to the same breeder that I got Cosmo from - because I so loved everything about him - and came home with my little girl Zoey. She was a hit from the start. While there to pick up Zoey when we were bringing her home - our breeder was starting to breed both the traditional and the parti yorkies. She had a little boy there that was just a peanut and walked right up to my husband and he fell in love. I informed them that we already had our boy and our breeded said that she was going to keep this little boy with her as a stud. My husband said that if she decided to not keep him to call us first. Well we went home and for a few weeks and the telephone rang and it was the breeder that had decided to not keep the litter after all- due to some family issues - and said that she was giving up first choice on our Reno. I said that we were happy with our two but my husband wanted to go and look and I knew....... Anyway when we went - here was this tiny little parti yorkie and my husband was in love. She was asking top dollar because of his coloring, size, personality, etc and I told her that I didn't think we could afford a 3rd dog so soon. She suggested to me - since I bred German Shepherds, why didn't I try my hand at breeding the yorkie and that Reno was of no relation to Zoey by girl. Anyway after much consideration that is what I thought we might do and we came home with Reno. He is a parti color little stud and is now almost two years old and weighs in at a bit 2 lbs 6 ozs. Talk about a little peanut with a big personality. But we were in love. I mentioned to the breeder that if I was going to try my hand at this that if she ever had a great coloring parti female of no relation to my Reno to give me a call. She did after about a year and now we have Kyra also. She is my parti female and she didn't get as big as I was hoping (5 lbs) to bred - she is currently 3 lbs 1 oz at a little over a year. She has a personality and looks like she is smiling all the time. Her coat is the thickest coat I have ever seen on a yorkie. I recently took them all to the vet for shots, check-ups and I was afraid that breeding her at around 3 1/2 pounds would be to small but our vet thinks it would be fine because our male is only 2.6 lbs. I have waited the two years to make sure that my dogs have the maturity level and to make sure that there are no health issues so I just bred Zoey and Reno together. This Friday Zoey will go in for an ultrasound since this will be my first "little" dog whelping and I am a little nervous about the delicate nature of these small pups. But it is exciting at our house. I told my kids that the size of our dogs full grown are the size of our Shepherd pups when we were breeding them. So - besides my 6 kids and 3 grandkids - that is our family. With the new pups coming I am hoping that I will be able to get advice from all of you out there. I so love this bred of dog and my biggest fear and that of not being able to adopt the pups out and wanting to keep them ourselves - but I told the kids we are going to be strong. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to join this community.

Hi and welcome to YT! I'm so glad you joined as well! You have a great story and I wish you all the luck in the world with your new venture.

There is a specific section for Breeders to share information but I am too new here to be able to offer to move this to that section. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I have will be able to held and advise you!

Good luck on the impending birth and again welcome!!

Your vet is wrong. Experts in Yorkies say it is extremely dangerous to breed under 5 pounds dogs and say its unethical. She has a very high chance of dying as well as needing a c-section and there are a lot of cases where when the c-section is done the mother will not except them which means you will have to bottle feed them very often. Please please do not breed you tiny girl again.

Hello and welcome to YT! Great story and I love both the traditional and parti Yorkie - as you can see in my avatar. Definitely check out the breeding section here as there is a ton of information there. I wish you and your little girl a successful and healthy pregnancy and welp. We would love to see pictures of your fur babies and please keep us informed of your little one's pregnancy/welp.

This.

Does your vet have any experience with small dogs? They're different than big dogs. I'm assuming you've been going to your current vet for a while since you've had GSDs for quite a few years.

However, I'm glad to hear that you're not breeding them because they're small (there are so many "greeders" out there that will only breed tinies because they're small) and that this was just a lack of small dog knowledge.

Please stay here and check out the breeder section stickies and keep us updated!

Welcome to YT! There is lots of great stuff to read and learn here. Parti yorkies are super cute but they are not the breed standard, actually they should be sold for less because they cannot be shown in the ring but people sell them for more because they call them "rare". I've got a cople off color yorkies myself and love them dearly but they should really be sold as pets only. Good luck, I hope your tiny girl makes it through this.

I am a breeder with some experience in toy breeds and I would NEVER, and I Mean NEVER would breed a girl less than 5 pounds. you are looking for a horrible tragedy, the size of the parents is only PART of the equation, the size of the pelvic bone is what matters and is been proved that the majority of dogs under 5 pounds need a C section , or wound up in trouble during whelping.. so if you breed her May God watch over her, because I would never recomend that..
best of luck to you.
hugs,

Welcome to YT. I wish your little Kyra the best but it breaks my heart that she is going to be a mama I have a 2.8 lb Kyra and I would never ever think of risking her life like this. I will be praying for your little girl.

Welcome to YT! Your instincts are right, 3.5#'s is way too small to breed. Your vet is misinformed, just bc a stud is small doesn't mean all the pups will be small...You need to know her line as well as the stud's line. Some will throwback large pups, this can be fatal for both your girl & any additional pups. It also sounds like the breeder you got your pups from are purposely breeding tinies. Do you know if any health tests were done?

Am glad you finally decided to join us here instead of lurking. Anyway, I'm sorry you bred that tiny 3 pound girl. That is too small, regardless of what a Vet. said. Fact is I would be finding me a different Vet. if one ever said that to me. Your girl could die, along with any pups and I hope when she starts to whelp, you take her to the hospital. It will be very critical for her and the pups.
It's my guess you bred her only to make money, since you had already told the breeder that you couldn't afford a third one so soon. Seems she talked you into breeding for money and that is so very, very wrong.
If your girl survives this, please have her spayed, and have the boy neutered. They should have been pets only in the first place.

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Many of us have joined YT after we made the mistake of buying a puppy mill pup or some other awful thing. We didn't know any better. The longer you are on YT the more you learn We will be here to help if we can. We are not beating you up, we are trying to share what we know. YT has a wonderful amount of information. Read the Breeders section threads.
Now my advice is: #1. You have already bred your Yorkies so that is that. #2. Experienced Yorkie Breeders would say bitches under 5 pounds should not be bred. It is too risky. So next time you will know better. #3. I used to breed and train Labs. Belive me when I say it is nothing like breeding toy dogs. #4. Try to find a local breeder of Yorkies that will help you during labor and delivery. #5. Ask local Yorkie breeder what Vet they use. It is a matter of life and death to have a Vet that really knows about small toy breeds.
That is my advice. Again, Welcome to YT.
