| luxating patella help! I have two yorkies. Ozzy (3 years old) and Abby (2 years old). Abby is having surgery today on her back right leg. She has been having leg problems since I got her which was when she was about 6 months old. She seems to only have trouble during the winter and the doctor diagnosed it as luxating patella. He has been telling me since her yearly checkup in May that she needed to have surgery. I decided to wait because she never showed any signs of limping or hurting and I graduated from college in May and wanted to get a job before I tried to pay for the surgery. Well, about a week ago we got out of bed and I always take them outside when we wake up (yes they sleep with me). My oldest yorkie (ozzy) was ready to go but abby could not be found. I hollered for her for a while but she never came (she has always been very excited to go outside). I went upstairs and found her on the bed so I picked her up and put her on the floor and I saw her limping. She would not put any weight on her back right leg. I took them outside anyhow and she did as she always did but she did not walk AT ALL on her leg. I began crying and felt guility that I had put the surgery off this long and called my vet that day and scheduled surgery and demanded that they give me medicine. She was fine that night and back to her old self again and was walking on her leg fine but she is having surgery at the moment. My biggest thing is I do not know what to expect. I am upset becuase the dotors did not talk to me and when I took her in the nurses were not even going to ask which leg it was. I asked for her to be put on the best medication they have but knowing her she is going to fight sleeping and try to get up and play with her brother and I don't know when that will be ok. I don't even know if I should let her walk at all. What about when she needs to use the bathroom? I really need some questions from someone who has been through this before. Luckily Christmas is this weekend so I have already told everyone in my life that this week I am 100 percent devoted to her and helping her recover but I need to know the best way to help her recover. Please help me!meg71481@yahoo.com Last edited by Meg71481; 12-20-2005 at 07:08 AM. |

| Welcome to YT...sorry you're first post had to be under these circumstances but I'm sure your little Abby will be fine. Hopefully you fully trust your vet because he/she is the one who will give you all the surgery follow-up do's and don'ts. Just follow their advice and ask all the questions that you need to, to set your mind at ease and to also help your baby with her recovery. Please keep us posted on how she's doing.

| My girlfriend just finished with this on one of her Yorkies and he will have to have the other leg done in a few weeks. She has 5 dogs so she setup a special area for Futu inside an excercise pen so none of the other dogs would try to sleep with him. She put blankets down, a low volume heating pad and his little bed. She took him outside every few hours so he could go the bathroom without the other dogs around. The best he could do the first week was piddle. Do not be surprised if you little one makes messes but the pain medicine really puts them under and this is good. Sleep and no activity is what you want. Futu's leg was in the cast for about 2 months so it was difficult but now he is walking on his one leg without pain. We all dread having to do the other leg but in the long run it will be better for him. You really will need to follow the vets advise so I am sure he can give you some great suggestions. Good Luck and we will be thinking of you.

| One thing I want to point out that sometimes gets overlooked is this..pain meds for your dog will have one of the same side effects it does on humans.major constipation problems. Do not be surprised if you have to use a suppository or puppy enema or something. It is hard to use laxatives or stimulants such as fiber, like canned pumpkin, as it will not work just once and stop. The baby can have multiple BM's and really cause problems with keeping the surgical site and cast clean. Talk with your vet about treatment for this or better still, how to prevent it.. Your baby is probably going to do a lot better than you think. Did your vet do pre-op blood work?? Prayers for you and yours are being sent.. |

| relpy to luxating patella Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I am supposed to call the vet at 2:30 and check on her and hopefully I can go get her. I am expecting her to not be able to use the bathroom like I have trained her and I know the medicine will affect her. It doesn't matter and if she is sleeping I am not about to try to make her go outside especially with the cold weather. Luckily my mom bought me a carpet cleaner for christmas. I will definitely listen to the vet but the way the nurses made it sound, I might not even be talking to the doctor that is why I got on this website in search for answers. I don't understand it either because my vet has always been so good to me. I will let everyone know how she is later on today. It's good to know that there are people that care about animals as much as I do. |
