| ![]() I know. I disagree with more than that but at least it is something compiled by veterinarians and published for the public to use as a basic list of symptoms that need veterinary attention. It doesn't seem to address neonates, some smaller dogs' or other special-circumstance needs adequately to some of us, I am certain. However, since we have no other veterinary authority to point a reader to that I know of, this is something a reader with a symptomatic dog could follow if they wish to get a dog veterinary attention before several days have passed. I was thinking if readers could see something in writing from the American Veterinary Medical Association with some basic advice about when to seek professional medical advice for a symptomatic dog, it might be helpful. This listing of symptoms, together with members' posts on a thread about a symptomatic dog, could perhaps council some to seek help sooner rather than later.

| ![]() I am wondering why the link to the "obvious signs of pain or anxiety" symptom, doesn't list shaking or trembling as an obvious sign of pain or anxiety, unless I'm missing it. My dogs often can shake or tremble when hurting, though not always.

| ![]() A pup acting EXTRA clingy can even be a sign of not feeling well. Last week Mina kept walking in circles around my ankles with her tail tucked or sitting and just staring at me. We made a run to the vet ( no bleeding,no throwing up,no temp). My vet put her on an antibiotic and within 12 hrs she was feeling better. Pretty sure that she had a tummy infection due to chews. If I had waited, until the afternoon or evening to just watch,it would of made for a very long night or a trip to the EC after hours. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() Jeanie - prior to making this a sticky, is there anything you'd like to add to the first post, based upon the responses in the rest of the thread? Bc once you make changes, I'll stickify the FIRST POST only - for ease of reading. You could add anything to it, even if it's non AVMA --- ie, you could add below the AVMA section "Add'l things that need immed attn" or blah blee. Or, just leave it as you initially intended. If you want to revamp it...leave the info here, and then I can copy/paste. ![]()

| ![]() I just wondered about a Yorkie going without water for 24 hours before it needs veterinary attention. I'd wondered if it shouldn't read "refused to drink water for 12 - 18 hours unless advised by the veterinarian". I also wish in addition to "injuries", "eye discoloration, swelling, prolonged squinting" could be added to #5 on the list. I've seen a dog out walking with such a red eye, swollen, very ugly and the owner says "well, I know he didn't hurt it - he's just allergic or something I think - we'll see". If they see the word "injury" alone, a lot think a stick to the eye or something they saw happen - something obvious. Like Nancy suggested, I would like to add "any human/other medicine not currently prescribed for the dog". Not being a vet though, I'm extremely hesitant to change anything. Maybe Ellie May & some others can add some ideas or maybe it is really okay as it is but I think if we don't keep it fairly short and sweet, it will get only partially read.

| ![]() What about this for #6 change (with hyperlinks kept intact): #6. Your dog ate something poisonous/dangerous , such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, foreign object, human/other medicine not currently prescribed for the dog
