| Yorkie smell Hi, i'm thinking about getting a yorkie and currently doing all the research so that i know what i'm getting myself into and be prepared... My question is about the smell of the yorkies. i know all dogs have a natural smell. i also read that good hygiene, quality food, and skin/dental diseases affect how a dog will smell. However, i kept on reading about yorkies being "smellier" than other dogs? Is that true in your experience? How does a yorkie compared to other long hair toy breeds (eg. maltese? cotons?) that supposedly smell less? Also, is it possible to completely eliminate the "doggie smell"? i'm planning on keeping my yorkie really clean but there are people around me who are very sensitive to the smell. By "doggie smell" i don't even mean the one that it's stinky from a distance (hopefully that will never happen)...but the musty smell that lingers on your hand after petting the dogs. Thanks! |

| My Yorkies don't have any 'smell' to them at all, maybe just the scent of shampoo or finishing spray left in their hair. In my experience, hounds and other short-haired types have more of an oily smell and feel to them, due to oils in their coats. There are some skin diseases/issues that may cause a 'off' odor, but a vet would be able to fix that.

| The only time my yorkie has a smell is if she has been outside but after 20 minutes or so it is gone and it is a smell all dogs put off when they go outside to let other dogs in the area know they are there and there is nothing you can do to eliminate that. I have never heard of yorkies being stinkier unless uncared for. I bathe mine weekly and brush her teeth weekly and no problems here unless she rolls in something or has thrown up. Where did you hear yorkies where stinky?

| I hadn't heard that yorkies are stinkier than other dogs, either. I have a big problem with "dog smell" - I can't take it at all (LOL). The yorkies I've been around, including my own, don't have that typical smell - it's great! |

| Smellier... Really? I am shocked you are finding that info... Yea he they might smell like a sweaty little kid after coming inside after potty break for a few minutes. And if you put their paws to your nose, I mean actually just full blown smell their feet you will get either a popcorn or Fritos smell but other then that nope they don't smell.

| J is still a small pup but has a definate smell, especially when he wakes up. He smells a bit like a teenage boy's bedroom truth be told - a bit sweaty but nothing doggy and the smell fades once he has been awake and running around for a while. After that he smells quite nice a bit like salted popcorn and it is only noticeable if I actively sniff him As soon as he comes in we wipe off his paws and underside (we live in a VERY rainy part of England) and we give his nether region and eye area a gentle wash daily, brush his teeth every evening and a full bath once a week. Even when my parents had big dogs who I would normally assossiate doggy smell with there was no smell unless it had rained for a month solid and to be honest - everyone in England smells a bit like a river then. If you keep them generally clean and look after their teeth, ears and make sure collars, bedding, crates etc. are kept clean then there tends to be no problem. |

| Yorkies are not smellier than any other dog. After a week Lexie smells like warm biscuits! I love it & can't stop sniffing her!

| I have never had any smell problems with Gracie. You are right that a good diet and proper hygiene are very important. Any dog can react to various ingredients in dog food so that could be an issue with any odor problems. |

OP - The only smell that you might smell on Mandie (other than her Fritos Feet) is if I haven't cleaned her face up yet for the day. Her face can get a little crusty if I don't and then it smells. Any other smell around the head would probably be a problem with the teeth or an ear infection.

| Smell is usually skin, ears, or mouth. I agree with the Fritos feet. -- I kind of like it though! LOL
