J is still a small pup but has a definate smell, especially when he wakes up. He smells a bit like a teenage boy's bedroom truth be told - a bit sweaty but nothing doggy and the smell fades once he has been awake and running around for a while. After that he smells quite nice a bit like salted popcorn and it is only noticeable if I actively sniff him
As soon as he comes in we wipe off his paws and underside (we live in a VERY rainy part of England) and we give his nether region and eye area a gentle wash daily, brush his teeth every evening and a full bath once a week. Even when my parents had big dogs who I would normally assossiate doggy smell with there was no smell unless it had rained for a month solid and to be honest - everyone in England smells a bit like a river then. If you keep them generally clean and look after their teeth, ears and make sure collars, bedding, crates etc. are kept clean then there tends to be no problem. |
