| Dental water additive? So Lexie is having her annual dental today. I'd like to maintain that dental cleanliness as much as possible, and was wondering what product would you all recommend as an additive to her water? She totally fights me on toothbrushing, so I've given up trying that as I hate to stress her out that much. Anything to improve her oral health would be great. Do these products even really work?

| We have a prescription water additive. I still brush weekly because the tarter still builds up and I use Petslife oral gel/spray.

| I do not know anything really about water additives but I have heard some have xylitol in them so you need to make sure to read the ingredients before buying one. But honestly nothing is better then actually brushing there teeth.

| The only water additive I'd use or trust would be Healthy Mouth. Approved by VOHC.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | My rescue Ralphie fights me too and acts like I'm hurting him, which makes it especially hard to do. I decided to give him a high value treat instead of his regular treat, and I've had some amazing results. The sell parmesan cheese in flakes in a plastic tub and one flake isn't very many calories, and he loves it so much. I've been able to increase tooth brushing time from 2 seconds to 30 seconds. Another advantage of the parmesan cheese, it may actually help fight tooth decay and gum disease. I also still use the petzlife.

| Thanks for those recommendations. I'll check those out. I am aware about the xylitol, and I'll lso check with the vet about this, too. Nancy, she looooves parmesan cheese! But not enough to put up with the toothbush, unfortunately.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Oh too bad, I honestly didn't think it would work, and it's been a slow process, he use to get a piece of cheese after only a few seconds, but I feel confident now and wish I'd tried it sooner. I swear, he use to act like I was killing him!

| Well, I'm all about picking my battles. Honestly, Lexie is such a great dog, gives me no problems about anything. That's the one thing that's a sticking point -- the toothbrushing. I just got a product from my vet. It's Perio-Support. it's a powder you put on food. she'll only need a 1/4 teaspoon each feeding. it has all natural ingredients and has probiotics as well. The trick with these products, apparently, is to start them on them after a fresh dental so their teeth are as clean as can be. They don't seem to work as well after tartar has accumulated.
