New to YorkieTalk...ADVICE PLZ!! Hello! I'm Chea' and I'm new to the site. Im in the military and I'm stationed in Grafenwoehr Germany. I've been here for two years and I leave in September and hopefully get to return to American soil! I have a one year old daughter named Amari and she loves dogs...thats mainly one of the reasons I'm getting a Yorkie. I haven't had a dog since I was a kid and even then, they were big dogs so I could use some advice. Any thing I should know specifically about Yorkies? What kind of things do I need to buy before he gets here in January? Ive been told that they are really good dogs...are they good for kids? ( im getting a male puppy) I know this has probably been asked before but plz help me!! Thanks!!

Thx a lot. That is my fear. She has been around small dogs a lot even in her crawling stage and she handled them well but she's 18 months. The "terrible twos" r coming fast and I dnt no wat will happen. She is extremely smart and well behaved but but kids will b kids sometimes.

Well, of course we love our Yorkies but they are not for everyone. They are terriers and have a very tenacious personality. They were originally bred to kill rodents in small areas. There are a variety of ideas about Yorkies around small children. Personally, I would avoid having small children around a Yorkie. Because of their small size they can easily get hurt by a young child dropping it or falling on it, etc. Do you know approximately the size this Yorkie would be when it matures? Some breeders do have larger Yorkies that may be safer around a child. Any puppy needs protection from a young one. They just don't know how to be gentle and have to be constantly supervised. There is a lot of info on this site about Yorkies. There is a library section. Maybe find a good book about the breed. Are you going to be able to bring this dog home with you? I know many countries require a quarantine time for a dog to be allowed in. Are military people exempt?

Her babysitter has a small dog and she is great with her. We will c what happens and the breeder is taking care of all that he will need and anything else will be taken care of by the military vet. I've done all the research and all should work out. I didn't no there was a library as well...I love this forum...everyone is so friendly and there is so much info. Thanks so much!!

I wrote this on another similar thread. Based on all the classified ads I see on Craigslist for yorkie adoption from mothers with young babies, I don't think a yorkie is a good dog for a young child. Most every ad I read says pretty much the same thing: having to give up 1 year old yorkie. Not getting along with my child. Or: Yorkie for adoption, new baby hurt yorkie and we must find yorkie new home. Then it most always states: prefer she go to family without young children. Based on all the ads I read, I'm thinking a yorkie isn't a good fit for a young child. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.
