| Newbie question or two. I am new to this forum and relatively new to yorkies. I have an older female whom I rescued from the pound (with three puppies, chorkies.) She is a silvery blue color and beautiful. I am trying to let her hair grow out (was almost shaved due to mats) and it refuses to straighten out. It is very curly. I blow dry her and within an hour or so, back curly again. Also...how do you keep their faces clean? Annie's hair is very thick around her muzzle and head. Even when she drink water it gets nasty. Next is Buddy. I got him four days ago. He is 9 months old and registered. He has wirey hair that has mixed colors on his back. There are some black, silver and red orange. I read the post on determining puppies hair but I guess I didn't understand it fully. He came from a puppy mill because he was too big to use as a stud (about 6 pounds.) He is very scared and shakes constantly. He loves Annie and stays by her all the time but runs from me. I take it he has not been socialized much. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. It's nice of you to rescue Buddy from a puppy mill. He will come around it will just take time and a gentle hand. You can get a lot of info. here on other pups that had the same issues as your Buddy. And pictures please.

| Welcome to YT! My Mandie's hair tends to curl some and I think it is because she was shaved before. It seems that gradually, as it grows, it doesn't curl as much. It does still a little though. Maybe this is what's going on with Annie. To clean her face, I usually use a wash cloth and warm water daily (to clean the eye goop and such) and then I use baby shampoo when it really needs washing. I wet her face and rinse it with a wash cloth so the water doesn't get up her nose or anything like that. You say Buddy has wiry hair and that he is registered? Is he AKC registered? I ask because wiry hair is not typical on a yorkie. They usually have silky or cotton coats. Post pics of your babies when you can. We love pics!

| Welcome to YT. I haven't known a lot of Yorkies but it sounds like your female may have a cotton coat. I guess that type of fur is much harder to care for. You may need to use a good all natural conditioner after shampooing and buy a good spray conditioner for between baths to keep her coat manageable. There is an area in the "sticky" section about how to deal with a puppy mill rescue. It takes a special kind of person to rehab a dog that has grown up under those types of conditions. Sounds like the poor guy was not socialized and may very well have been mistreated. I would read that article and maybe find some others who have gone through this experience. They need lots of love and patience. Move slowly when getting near him and expect to give him some time to realize that you are not the enemy. |
