I am so sorry to read about what happened to little Gizmo (and for your daughter having to witness it). I agree with a post I read above...a drain should have been put in the wound.

I am also happy to read that Gizmo is starting to act like Gizmo again and eating well. Sending hugs and prayers for a continued healing for your little one!

I was just wondering. I don't actually carry anything but I do keep an eye out. We don't have a problem around here with loose dogs, though I know one can get out by accident. Maggie is 10 pounds and I just reel her in quick if I sense a problem.

The one dog I do know of who was injured by another dog was in her own yard and it was a leashed dog that went up her driveway and tore her chest open. She is a shnauzer mix and the other dog was a yellow lab. That dog has a muzzle or some kind of head leash but we think she got Bella with a swipe of the paw. It might not have been intentional to harm but how do you know?

The wasp spray can go up to 20 ft & IF you feel in danger & the other dog is NOT controlled ie, leashed, chained, in the house or behind a fence as it should ALWAYS be & NOT running loose where it can be a danger to someone then you have the rite to protect yourself & your family and/or pet. There are leash laws in every state that I am aware of & these laws are put in place for the protection of the dog & others so IF the dog owner has a problem with their dog being sprayed then , they had better follow the laws. I don't know how much damage the spray can do but it will deff deter an attacking dog & IF it comes to me or my dog being attacked by a dog that is not being properly controlled/restrained, it's getting sprayed no matter what kind of damage the spray does to the attacking dog.

As my neighbors chow was actually tearing the boards off the fence that separates our back yards, to get to my babies, I sprayed that vicious dogs face with the pepper spray as it got its head and one front leg thru the fence.....(this is pepper spray the police use, and I always had it on me when we went into the back yard because of that dog and my fear that she was going to tear thru the fence to get my Yorkies)....it had absolutely NO EFFECT on that dog!!! Someone posted earlier that pepper spray works on some but not on all dogs...VERY TRUE!!! And while I never would consider injuring another animal just because I see it walking down the street, minding its own business, the minute that dog or animal or person for that matter, goes into an attack mode and is attacking me or my pet, "injury" to that attacking animal/person is of little or no concern to me, and I will do WHATEVER it takes to stop the attack.

Hi all! Just to let you know what is going on with my Gizzy... Well, the wounds, as you know, abscessed. Both sides where his wounds were started to rot away, and he was my zombie dog for about a week or so. Last Friday, he had reconstructive surgery and the vet cut all the dead rotting skin away and now, he is my frankenfuzzy dog He is doing wonderful and will get his sutures out this coming Friday. Thanks for all your support and prayers for our family. It was a rough month for sure!

Pepper spray has always worked for me. But you need to get the big cans. It's all about volume. And I feel sorry for the dog if they do resist. Because if it's still attacking and I feel threaten I have to shoot it.

Glad the owner stepped up for the costs, I hope they take further measures to secure their dog.

People with certain breeds should know to take extra precautions and it is every dog owners responsibilty IMHO to socialize their dogs properly.

I hope Gizmo heals quickly and is suffering as little as possible.

I've heard great things about sugar rub treatments for abscesses.

I carry mace...pepper spray is legal and a very smart idea.

When we go to the woods or river hiking even campingfor in resorts etc I have bear spray we always take...ironically the only time I have ever pulled it out was for an unleashed growling dog charging us...thankfully the owner ran up and restrained their dog just before I sprayed.

What does "bear spray" do? Never heard of it. Is it stronger than mace?

No just larger dosage eider stronger spray range.

Pepper spray comes in lets say 2oz key chain attachable. Cans bear spray is 16oz with a trigger...like the new fedreeze cans


The EPA regulates all pepper sprays they all max out a 2.0 of the spray ingredient.

So say hottest on the market some add in natural food substances and strong odors they all actually are pretty much the same.

I just prefer bear spray because of the amount and the distance width of spray compacity I don't want to gave to get up close and personal with a bobcat puma or bear...or skunk even as the hinting store guy pointed out they might spray back uf close enough.

It can be just more a detourant than actually used to face spray.

You can get it up to 4oz before they start calling it Bear spray and putting it in bigger cans . 4oz is a decent size can. The key chain ones are worthless. 2oz min

I agree here.

So glad your daughter was not hurt and hope the infection will be cleared up soon. Sometimes the infection can be worse than the bite itself.

I have not read though all of this and saw this on the first page and wanted to say, I know for a fact that this is true.
