I like to visit and still am waiting for the perfect pup for me to save.
Yep, I think we're on the same page. When I was more involved in the show world, I thought I was doing right by the breed, and still feel like I did make a good contribution, but it is 2 very different worlds. If I want a healthy dog that, if heaven forbid, genetic or major health issues do develop, I know they'll do what they can to help us through, I'll go to a good breeder. But being in the rescue world, I know health issues come with the territory! I think both are great ways to get a pet - And I think the same principles apply when looking. Wiether your going to a breeder or a rescue to get a pet, I think it's important to do your research. Shelters are another story, those dogs will die if nobody takes them, but some rescues are better then others, just as some breeders are better then others. Sadly, I see far to many rescues that only take small, purebred, highly adoptable dogs and charge way higher in adoption fees then they actually spend on the dog, and that breaks my heart, I personally can't give any rescue the time of day if I don't see them also trying to help dogs that may be less adoptable, it's hardly rescue if you're only taking dogs that probably would have found homes anyway, and making money off them! I wish there was more then one class for non-profits - A class for those that DO pay people and a good part of their donations goes to paying overhead, and one that ALL the money goes directly to the care of the animals

Line breeding has to be done to maintain the best charistics of the breed without getting too close in the blood line. It is such a delicate balance and even some of the best have thier problems. Sometimes new people get into show/breeding without really learning the multitued of things that they must know. They may buy good stock but out crossing to the worng line can cause huge problems. I consider the breeding of purebred dogs a serious undertaking. Those who take it lightly or think they know everything after only a few short years are going to run into trouble very soon.
As in any walk of life there are the good bad with a few excellent as well as the clueless. With what is going on with so many of the toy breeds it is especially important to do the research before buying. There are some out there that have been lucky in purching from irresponsible breeders but there are also many that have had the horrible heartache of seeing thier precious baby suffer terribly.
I am one who bought from a byb...I have been very lucky so far...I can only pray they stay healthy...I decided to take a pro-active approach and purchased pet insurance, for my first two as well as my recent addition.
I have read many post in the sick and injured forum...that is what prompted my decision....Please follow the excellent advice you have been given here...had I found YT before I bought Raelle and Orion, though i love them dearly...they would not be in my home. I would have known better...red flags were everywhere...I was naive and fell in love with the cute puppy!
I learned buy your breeder first...I am so in love with my Biewer's breeder...Jersey is a joy!
Please ere on the side of caution...good luck! Your baby will find you...I speak from experience..Jersey found me!

As I have often said: there is no really public place that educates the public about purebred dogs. You don't learn it in school for sure. The major place people see purebred dogs advertised are pet stores and classified ads....oh, and now the internet. Of course the public thinks that these are legit since most advertise as AKC or some bundle of letters that look nice. The BYBs always say they have "years of experience." The only place the general public ever sees a show dog is in the once a year Madison Square Garden event and few even watch that. People who do watch it never imagine purchasing such a dog and know nothing of the show world. It is no wonder that so many people get involved in what they see that is out front in the public eye. The world of show/breeders are a group of people that are not really out there in the public eye. You find them at shows and in breed publications and the kind of publications that give the show info and stats. Unless a person knows a reputable breeder, or knows of one, they have to practically be an investigative reporter to find out how to buy a purebred puppy.

I could be wrong but I think I saw a picture of that last puppy on a website several months ago It was the same background and everything. This is really weird. Please make sure you check out the breeder in person.

Many of those online brokers and puppy mills post the same pictures over and over.

Thanks!
I'm sorry I am so late in responding. Those pictures that you shared with us, truly are very deficient in terms of evaluating structure of the puppy.

I am also concerned with the "photoshopping" or serious editing of the first two pics. What bugs me is the background isn't real, and I look at that with caution. Most puppy pictures, show a natural background, whether that be with in the home, or outside on a deck or on the grass.

Now what you need to see is various pics of the puppies. From each side, from standing front on, and from rear pics. Both "hard stack" and free standing puppy pics. Hard stacking is when it is obvious the breeder has "placed" the puppy in a certain position.

Also you should see videos of the puppies movement. If at all possible.

Yorkies go through a whole lot of coat and color changes as they mature, and I for one, am not expert enough to judge from these three pictures, if any would grow up to have the standard coloration, and the preferred silk coat.

I wish you the very best of luck in finding a healthy and well structured Yorkie pup

Seems like the little pup in picture 3 has large ears compared to picture 1. Still, all 3 cute. But you have to know the breeder and the history of their breeding program, stated breeding practices, environment the dogs are whelped/raised in, health testing done, etc., to really make the wisest choice.

I don't think anyone is trying to be negative here. Just realistic. There is just a huge amount of breeders that are turning out Yokies by the buckets full but they are people who are out to cash in by taking advantage of the current big market for toy size dogs. The little furry ones seem to be in demand the most. Everyone is just trying to warn you in order to help ward off the terrible problems that arise many times from buying from people who are not breeding for the dog or the new owner's best interest.

Thank you everyone for the great advice. I really do appreciate it. I am going to meet the first puppy this Sunday. And the breeder sent me unphoto shopped photo's. The puppy is on a white sheet. I'm satisfied with the breeder she has went over and beyond answering all my questions.

Thanks again
Crystal

Good luck! And remember to ask plenty of questions and ask for PROOF of health testing on parents!!! A little homework and persistence will pay off in the end, can't wait until you find the perfect baby!

good luck, and I am soooo glad you are going in person, if you can when you bring a puppy home have a full blood work panel done, it can help identify problems that just a quick puppy check will overlook, it is also nice to have a baseline blood work on you pup for future reference.
