Yep, I think we're on the same page. When I was more involved in the show world, I thought I was doing right by the breed, and still feel like I did make a good contribution, but it is 2 very different worlds. If I want a healthy dog that, if heaven forbid, genetic or major health issues do develop, I know they'll do what they can to help us through, I'll go to a good breeder. But being in the rescue world, I know health issues come with the territory! I think both are great ways to get a pet - And I think the same principles apply when looking. Wiether your going to a breeder or a rescue to get a pet, I think it's important to do your research. Shelters are another story, those dogs will die if nobody takes them, but some rescues are better then others, just as some breeders are better then others. Sadly, I see far to many rescues that only take small, purebred, highly adoptable dogs and charge way higher in adoption fees then they actually spend on the dog, and that breaks my heart, I personally can't give any rescue the time of day if I don't see them also trying to help dogs that may be less adoptable, it's hardly rescue if you're only taking dogs that probably would have found homes anyway, and making money off them! I wish there was more then one class for non-profits - A class for those that DO pay people and a good part of their donations goes to paying overhead, and one that ALL the money goes directly to the care of the animals
