Yorkie Yakker | So if my morkie has hair not fur-winter? So I live in canada, but very very very south near toronto in ontario. I remember my breeder told me he has hair not fur (his hair is very much on the maltese side) its very fine, and unlike my other dog (who has a double coat of fur) looks to me like he could get cold very easily when it comes to winter time. Do you think then because of this hair vs fur dilemma he should definitely be wearing a sweater when it gets to snowing and such, for a walk?

| I'd definitely put a sweater or little jacket on any small dog in general for cold weather. I would think they'd get colder/hotter more quickly and have more difficulty maintaining a safe body temperature than a larger dog just based on the surface area to volume ratio regardless of having fur or hair. And besides, it's a good excuse to buy cute little outfits for your little one Your Kirby is very adorable! Last edited by tokipoki; 09-16-2012 at 08:27 AM. |

| The coldest it gets here is 20 below windchill. On those really cold days I put on a fleece on mine. Other days I think they are fine but I might put on clothes so they be cute. They just go outside to do there business and are right back in. We dont take them on walks if it gets below 30 degrees. We are more active outdoors this yr though so I could see us going out for walks andsuch even though its below 30 degrees so I would put a fleece on them in those situations

| I think Maltese and Yorkies have the same type of hair and they don't have the under coat that other dogs have and do require a jacket or sweater outside in the winter. My yorkie even as a bigger yorkie requires clothes pretty much all the time except outside in the summer because she gets so cold so easily.

| Brody and Mia very much appreciate coats, sweaters, jackets, fleece hoodies, raincoats, jammies, and love wearing their clothes. I crocheted sweaters for my Yorkie-Poo many years ago, too...he would shiver from the cold.

| The rule for mine is if I am wearing a coat, they do too. They don't wear coats when we just run out for a quick potty in the backyard, but when we go for walks or to the park... they are always wearing a coat if I am.
