| Working out with your Yorkie Hey everyone, I run about 2 miles a day outside and then some stretching afterwards. I'm not going too fast (7:30 miles). Can my pup go on this run with me when he's fully grown or is that too strenuous? Do you guys do any sort of exercise with yours? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Me and hubs used to run w/ Wylie and omg, it was SO FUN! We'd run at the base of some mountains we live right by and he'd just have a blast. I think if you worked your kiddo up to it there would be no reason he couldn't go with you. Now that we have 3, we just do walks. But it sure was fun when we used to run.

Max Main's Mamma Donating YT Member | I definitely think that is feasible. I run with Max sometimes bu usually its more like a run walk (not because of him, because of me LOL!). We will go more than 2 miles but it a run/walk thing. We are working up to 2 miles straight.

| Can I run with my Yorkie ? I don't see why not. You may have to work up to it. Watch your dog for signs of discomfort or excessive panting. Your climate is fairly mild, but of course you know about watching temps. My dogs love the fast walk, slow walk, speed power walk, rotation. My doctor tells me it is a better cardio work out, than jogging or flat out running. My joints wouldn't take the pounding anyway.

| Well, I think it's possible. Depends upon how stubborn your baby is. Sometimes in the middle of a walk, my Lucy will just stop and sit or lie down. Then I have to pick her up and carry her home. When she does that, it's like picking up a Slinky. If your baby stops, then you'll have to stop too unless you can carry her/him in a pouch or sling. Good luck. Tracey |

| I've actually seen a lot of people running with Yorkies! I think you need to build up to of course. Don't just start with a 4 mile run lol. But yes certainly possible. I would wait until over a year for those growth plates to close. Couch to 5k has a program including your dog too you may wanna check out.

| If you start your pup out when it's small. Just run in the yard. I run Moki. But not to much and not everyday. He's just a pup. No jumping and don't over do it. I'm getting him in shape so i can do agility. But they don't recommend agility till the are a year. I let him run and stop when he wants. He will fetch and recall for 10 mins straight no problem and he will run as fast as he can. If I don't run him for a couple days he gets bad and goes crazy= all the built up energy. So if you condition your pup you have to stay will it of they will be conditioned to tear stuff up . But i would recommend getting his knees checked first. Yorkies can have bad knees. Vet said Moki was 0 so thats good. No wiggle. But I dunno if they can really tell or not? I took him to 2 different Vets both said the same.Let the pups reactions to your playing tell you JMO Last edited by ironmike86; 09-10-2012 at 08:46 PM. |

| My two guys are total opposites when it comes to walks. My 8 month old could definitely run (if I didn't have bad knees, he could) My 1.5 year old will go boneless on me after about 2 blocks and I have to carry him home. |

| Yup it definitely depends on the pup. He he wants to run you can condition him if he doesn't I would suggest pleasant walks |

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | That sounds like fun! Although we do not run, we love to go bike riding. KS has a basket and goes with us every time. She adores it!

| Pippy isn't quite 4 months old yet, and we are already running almost 2 miles! She absolutely loves it! Every time she sees me grab my running shoes she starts acting crazy, running toward the door and barking! It's almost all I can do to even get her running harness on her, she's so excited. The bonus? Her hour long nap after we get back home! Gives me time to shower and relax/get ready for work! I'm going to slowly work her up to a 5k, so that she'll be able to do races with me!
