| Pet Store Grooming I get tired of people knocking a particular pet store or the entire chain because of their bad experience or other experiences they have heard of at one of the stores. It is really refreshing, once in a while, to hear someone say, I went to Petsmart (or some other pet store), had my dog groomed, and they did a great job. This does happen! Occasionally, I used to take my dad's big old lab/golden retriever mix to Petsmart. He didn't look exactly the same every time we finished, but he always came out neat and clean, smelled good, has his nails trimmed, and thought he was God's gift to the world. It was fun to take him back to my dad - who thought he looked wonderful every time. I think these stores are perfectly adequate for most breeds and do a good job. Some breeds are relatively easy to groom. And, some dogs - Yorkies, Poodles, Bichons, and many others present a real challenge to any groomer. I have changed private groomers four times trying to find one that has a clue about grooming a Bichon (they are difficult). I have found in my area that some groomers actually specialize in one or two of the more difficult breeds and are very good at grooming them. Yorkies (with longer hair or a show cut) need to go to a groomer who knows how to groom Yorkies. Probably the best way to find one is to ask other Yorkie owners where they go and how satisfied they are with the results. I have groomed some of my own dogs for years. My Yorkie has a puppy cut, and I can do this as well as any groomer in town --and better than some. But if and when I decide to let his hair grow out --we are going groomer hunting! I wouldn't know where to begin. My biggest problem with my little Yorkie (and groomers have the same problem) is that he is a "wiggleworm." We Yorkie owners have high maintenance dogs --they require a little more specialized care than many other breeds do. And yes yes yes - take a picture with you to the groomer (even for a puppy cut) - show the groomer the kind of cut you want. (I have seen Yorkies cut a dozen different delightful ways - but you know what you want - so take a picture.) Good luck! Carol Jean |

| I cant say all petsmarts do a bad job but there have been alot of petsmart gooming complaints on here. I would never take my dogs there. I would rather go to my private groomer. It is the same person everytime and she knows how I want them cut.

| I always feel a twinge when I read the horror stories and see the picutes of bad jobs done by Petsmart groomers. And MANY years ago, I had a Petsmart groomer shave my Sheltie a couple of days before I had scheduled an appointment for professional pictures, so I understand how upsetting it can be. BUT.... I was referred to a groomer that manages my local Petsmart, and she is FABULOUS!! She loves my dogs, and usually has a couple of hers at the store with her while she's working. She's always done an excellent job with the Shelties and the Eskie with their thick under coats, but I was a little concerned when I took Dublin for the first time. I armed myself with pictures, though, and she did a great job with him. Widget has only had a trim, and she did fine with that, too. However, she's the only one who grooms my dogs, and if she ever left, I'd prefer to follow her. I really don't think I'd continue at the Petsmart because the groomers are really young, seem inexperienced, and they have a high turnover...

| Sherry Lynn - I agree with you. I just don't like generalizations. I know some of the groomers at Petsmart (and other places) are young and inexperienced. But for a lot of people, they can still do an acceptable job. I think those of us who have dogs that need special cuts need more experienced groomers and need to search for the one that is perfect for us. A lot of dogs don't even have hair that grows (a groomer's delight!). They just get dirty and a little shaggy looking. So their trip to the groomer is much easier. Every one of my dogs has to be cut a certain way or they look awful. And, they all have hair that grows faster than mine - and it matts, etc. etc. etc. So, I need to find a decent groomer and stay with them for a while - then we finally start getting cuts that we're all happy with. Having had a lot of groomers over the past 20 years, I am amazed at how many of them never went to school. They learned on the job. Many of them have self-educated themselves along the way, but they never had any formal training, and many of them have become excellent "private" groomers. I don't like stereotyping or generalizing - it is not right to "imply" that all pet store groomers are bad. This is not a true statement. (You didn't do this, but many people have.) I have had some of my worst pet haircuts from "private groomers," but a lot of private groomers do an excellent job. Carol Jean |

| We just got our first Yorkie, Guy, in June. He's a three-year-old that we bought from a family that took very good care of him, but they had acquired so many pets that they couldn't give him the attention he wanted - He likes LOTS of attention. Anyway, so far we've had him groomed at Petco and Petsmart. We weren't too pleased with the results at Petco, but in fairness, it was at least partially our fault. We knew that the look we wanted for him is called a "puppy cut," so when the groomer asked if that was what we wanted, we said yes. When we picked him up he looked adorable, except for one big thing... His ears. Guy is a purebred, but he has floppy ears. They shaved his cute ears as they would have for a Yorkie whose ears stand up! He also seemed a bit nervous when we picked him up, but we didn't know whether or not he was accustomed to being groomed. Next we tried Petsmart and had much better results. In fact, the groomer even questioned why his little ears were shaved like that. He has a cottony coat, and it was so soft and pretty when they were done! When the groomer brought him out, he was licking her face and wagging his little tail - Not at all nervous! You should have seen him prancing around Petsmart afterwards - He knew how cute he looked. He's normally wary of strangers at first, but he kept running up to people looking for attention! It was so funny! We got the name of the groomer and will continue taking him back to her. So, that's my two cents! |
