Thank you!! Scratching and all I am honestly glad to have him here next to me safe at home! I reacted quickly, but I for next time in an emergency, could have probably calmed down a whole lot... I was a nut!

It is so disappointing that the facility would give him the wrong food. He has been on a special diet so long that I'm sure it was a shock to his system to get different food. Someone goofed by not writing special instructions for him to be fed the RX food. Can he have a steroid shot or Benadryl to help with the itching until you get him to the specialist?

I have actually called his specialist today to ask about the possibility of him getting a steroid shot. I soooo hate to do this bc he is just now getting relief from the horrible and extensive yeast that was all over his skin from scratching so profusely while we have tried to start this whole process.

I know it might sound trivial, but this is all not cheap in the least and first and foremost I know that he has to be miserable with all of the constant scratching. He has been so much happier ...almost like a different dog ..the past couple of weeks when he finally had some relief from the nonstop itching he has suffered with...

I know their first and most important task was to get the hook which posed such a threat to him... I just also thought that with him being in ICU and being treated w dermatology specialists at same exact clinic.. that he would have gotten his proper food bc it was definitely in his records and I definitely told them. Regardless, he is definitely having a huge flare up.

They saved him and I am extremely grateful!! I don't mean to not sound grateful..It is just all a little frustrating to now have triggered this whole thing back into motion... we might have to start all over bc now it is impossible to know if his reaction is bc the medicine we just weaned him off of was controlling his allergy or if he really does have a food allergy andthe new food is stopping the allergic reactions he's been having... So it's just a little frustrating this far into the food trial!!

I am so glad your little one is ok! I do not think I would of been able to handle the same situation as well as you did. Reacting as fast as you had probably helped him so much without leaving even more damage inside his tummy. you have been through a lot, hopfully things will settle down with your babies. things happen in a flash, especially accidents like this one. My shh tzu also had a bout with severe itching and hair loss las month, it was only her so whatever was causeing it was not contagious. I took her to our vet and they did 4 skin scrapings on her, she also had been chewing and biting herself, she was highly uncomfortable and most of her hair underneath her tail was raw . Turns out she had a bacteria infection. The vet placed her on 2 different antibiotics and instructed me to bathe her twice a week with a special shampoo I got from him. I cannot tell u the name of the infection , but it is common especially in pug nosed breeds like Miely,but it can happen to any dog. Scary part is that this is a underlying condition, meaning it is brought on by something else. The vet thought it was from getting out of her heat cycle and her hormones were out of whack, we know it is not due to her thyroid, she weighs 10 lbs, which is on the smaller size of the shih tzu breed. Anyway she finished her medication in 2 weeks but I am still bathing her with the shampoo he gave me twice a month and their has been no more hair losss and very little scratching. Suzi our yorkie never had it, her hair is beautiful, Miely on the other hand had a medical shave down, but is looking better now and the sore spots have all healed. No special diet was required and she seems to be back to her old self.

I understand your frustration about the error. This happens way to often in human hospitals as well. The person who admits a patient is responsible to get the needed info on the records where anyone who has interaction with the patient can see it.
Right now, as you said, what is important is the comfort of your little guy. Steroid injections work pretty quickly and will at least calm down whatever reaction he is having. I used to have a dog that went through this also until we finally found what was causing the problem. Hope they can help him soon.

Well, thanks everyone for the replies. We are certain he definitely has allergies of some sort..according to his dermatologist he has been seeing. However, because he was in such a horrible state we started antihistamine/steroid combo med and ketaconozole med with his food trial. He improved what was literally the difference in night and day..his bald spots started filling in, scratching stopped, and hair stopped falling out everywhere, and he just seemed so much happier.

But, there was no way to know if he was merely responding to the meds or if this new food worked which would of course have meant that he was indeed having a food allergy. We had just weaned him off of all the meds down to just his prescription food which is what makes this so hard to now know what is actually causing his intense reaction.

So, I just spoke with his dermatologist, and we are indeed going to have to start him back on his steroid/antihistamine and then wean him back off...bc he is definitely having an acute and severe reaction to something.

So, again thanks for the support! I don't so much mind the frustration for myself..it is seeing him go back to suffering from something he had finally experienced some relief from that kills me..... but at the same time, I am well aware that the priority was getting him better that night in ICU. This medication worked wonders for him before, and I feel sure that it will settle everything back down again!! I have full faith in his dermatologist, and I trust that we will get him back on the right track.....

And I am also reminding myself that this really is a small small setback compared to how wonderfully everything went. They did a phenomenal job retrieving this endoscopically vs having to actually cut him open. And he has had no problems from the procedure whatsoever. This was just an accident, and I know it can happen, and I am blessed that everything went as well as it did! So, he's just had his dose of medicine and I'm hoping by tomorrow;s second dose that he will get some relief!

Have you cobsidered a raw model prey diet,especially since you can isolate individual ingredients?

It might be a bit of effort at first but it gets routine and easy later plus the overall health bennefits are wonderful.

I've been reading alot about the various raw diets, and I did ask his dermatologist about starting one..but she wants me to stick with this food trial first to see if he responds.... he initially did great until right now.... But I have read so many good things on here from those that have their dogs on the raw diet.

Because if he has another bout with yeast, I am not going to want to keep feeding his things that will just feed his yeast...so I'm not opposed to it by any means.
