Need ideas for keeping cool

Kaji's foam house. It's light blue with brown paws. We picked it up at cvs over a year ago. Kaji's so cute. He invited me in one day. Silly baby doesn't realize I'm too big.

Air conditioning is not just a comfort thing...it is a necessity in areas like ours. If I did not have that a/c, I would have to take my pups somewhere that had a/c.

Our AC went out last May (which in Georiga can be trouble), I bought one of the portable AC units that vent out the window and let me tell you it was a lifesaver.

I think Kaji's set up of the insulated house and water bottle frozen is GENIUS!!! I would try that for sure (in fact I may try it myself).

We do the same, and we have a gas fireplace for winter backup heat if needed

I'll keep an eye out for these houses at my local CVS. Sometimes they bring back these little treasures, but it's so random. There was a blue for boys and a punk for girls.

I keep this little house up for him all year long. It's where he keeps the toys he doesn't want me to find. We don't have AC in my apt. For the most part, my apt stays cool. It's out of direct sunlight and on a sub level. Once it heats up though.... Poor Kaji! He has a thick coat, and I remember trying everything to keep him cool and comfy. I love that little house! It's his little haven. All I have to do is add the frozen water bottles and it's perfect for summer.

I've been doing the frozen water bottles and that does help - I also have some soft gel cold pack things from my chiropractor that I keep in the freezer and set out for him to lay in. I do have tile in my kitchen, bathrooms, and hallways but Benji likes to stay in my bedroom. I'll try the "cool house" and see how that works!

It's not that hot inside - about 85 in the house in my bedroom at the hottest, since I have the old swamp cooler running most of the house is quite a bit cooler - but he likes to be in the hottest room of the house even though he doesn't handle the heat well, silly boy! I could close it off - but I do like him in there when the bigger dogs get playing so he doesn't get trampled, or when people come over so he doesn't get stepped on.

I don't know how you bear it. 85 is sweltering inside to me. I can't stand it over 74.

Well, the idea looks ok - but it says the freezer packs only last 2 hrs . Plus they're in the UK - shipping would be crazy, and by the time it got here, the need for it would probably be past.

I quite agree - it was the idea of it that I thought was good....a friend of mine has one of these, and she ordered about 4 of the freezer packs. She 'rotates' as and when necessary Apparently it's very efficient, and invaluable in the car.

What I was wondering was - do you have something similar there? It might be worth bearing in mind for if/when in the future.... Sally + Harry x

Hurricane Ike introduced me to a multitude of new experiences....while I had purchased all these items for "just in case", I had never used them....after Ike, out came my generator and my portable a/c, even a window unit for my bedroom, because, like you said, it is a matter of life and death for our babies with this humidity and heat! I had no electricity for almost 2 weeks, but I had a working refridgerator, an a/c, a small tv and a coffee pot that kept us all alive!

Can you pick up a small window a/c unit and just put it in one room and he can spend the time in there? I know QVC has a a/c unit that is inside the room. There is a little maybe, 6-8 inch thing that sits on the window sill and that is all (if there is a problem with a window a/c unit). It is a bit pricey but it might be worth the investment.

During hurricaine IKE, here in Houston a few years ago, we were without power for THREE WEEKS!! I had just had major abdominal surgery also. It was HORRIBLE!!

Yep, it was quite the experience indeed. I was well prepared though....bought everything I needed before it hit. I even had fencing stuff to put up a temporary fence because I knew my fence would probably be down. The one mistake I made was not buying disposable pee pads...only had my washables. With no washer and dryer, not a great idea.

Petco has a fan that attaches to a crate. It runs 100 hours on 2 batteries. My cat loves to lie in the bathtub. lol

I'll have to look into that, but I've never seen anything similar - that'd be the perfect answer for in the car!

I've seen those and have a few, but they don't help any more then my box fan does - It helps some by circulating the air, but not enough. The swamp cooler keeps the rest of the house about 75, but the room he likes to stay in is quite a bit warmer at the peak part of the day.

The problem with window AC units is my cats. Every one I've seen only works well with windows that open up and down, mine open side to side. Up and down window they have things that extend out to the side so they're secure. But I'd have to take the screen out to make it work, and then my cats could jump out the window, so that's not going to be an option for me. I need something more portable that if it needs to vent out the window, it can do so with the window screens in place so my cats can't get out.
