Need ideas for keeping cool Ok, my air conditioner went out - and it's getting HOT in Vegas, it's going to be a week or so before I can get the repair guy out to fix it. SO, in the mean time I'm worried about especially Benjamin, he doesn't handle heat well! I have a swamp cooler I've turned on, but it doesn't work well back in the bedroom where Benjamin likes to hang out - I know years ago before I had such a small dog I saw an air conditioned dog crate, I think it was more designed for a car, but I'm sure I can get an adapter to use it in the house as well, anyone know where I can find something like that? It'd be worth the investment, since it'd keep him alot cooler when I take him places as well since he LOVES to go with me wherever I go (and if the trip is all doggy-friendly places, I almost always take him!). |
I don't know about an AC crate. I have seen cooling mats you can put in the freezer and they can lay on them. I hope you can get it fixed soon. |

Do you have tile anywhere in the house he can lay on? If not, you can buy a tile by the piece at Home Depot. Put sticky felt pads on the back of marble tile (marble keeps cool & the felt protects your floor) and push the tiles together to create a cold area for Benjamin to lay on. It's a cheap solution and it's easily portable. |
What I have done in the past is recycle water bottles. I fill them and put them in the freezer. Kaji has a foam house, which insulates surprisingly well. I put three water bottles in there. One against each wall. I don't let him have direct contact with the bottles. I take a blanket (thin, like the ones you buy at the dollar section at Target) his little house felt like it had it's own AC unit! The bottles lasted a good 8 hours before I needed to change them out. |
Doesn't Mitshibishi make a little single room air conditioner that doesn't even go in the window? I've seen them advertised on television & they look very mininimalist. Either that or another single room A-C might be your only recourse to keep that baby comfortable. How hot is it in your house during the peak heat period? That might determine what you have to do. |
They have portable air conditioners that can be moved to whatever room you need to cool: Portable Air Conditioners: Portable Air Conditioner, AC - Best Buy |
Thanks for the great suggestions! I've looked at portable AC units, but want something that can also go in the car to help keep him cooler there as well if I'm going to spend the money. I may get both! I'll have to order a portable one if I go that way, I went all over trying to find one and everywhere is sold out right now! It just got hit really quick this year! I've been doing the frozen water bottles and that does help - I also have some soft gel cold pack things from my chiropractor that I keep in the freezer and set out for him to lay in. I do have tile in my kitchen, bathrooms, and hallways but Benji likes to stay in my bedroom. I'll try the "cool house" and see how that works! It's not that hot inside - about 85 in the house in my bedroom at the hottest, since I have the old swamp cooler running most of the house is quite a bit cooler - but he likes to be in the hottest room of the house even though he doesn't handle the heat well, silly boy! I could close it off - but I do like him in there when the bigger dogs get playing so he doesn't get trampled, or when people come over so he doesn't get stepped on. |
And buy fans if you don't already have some. Even in A-C, I have to have air circulating when the unit isn't running when it is hot. |
Oh have that well covered! Have a big box fan and a osolating fan in my bed room, the box aimed at the area he likes best, and have several other fans through the house. |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/alb...ctureid=112617 Kaji's foam house. It's light blue with brown paws. We picked it up at cvs over a year ago. Kaji's so cute. He invited me in one day. Silly baby doesn't realize I'm too big. :p |
I bought a portable a/c unit in case my central a/c unit ever went out....I will use it in one room in my home, keep that one room cool for the dogs and me in case the a/c man cant get out here to fix the a/c....our temps are already mid 90's here in Houston....we would DIE in those temps if we could get no a/c! |
It's in the 100s here most days! The old swamp cooler helps - but it's still quite warm! I love that house - I'll go to CVS and see if I get lucky, if not I'll try to find one! |

Plus they're rather pricy. |
Good afternoon! Just a bit of input from the UK! :) www.canineconcepts.co.uk make a fan that attaches to your crate. It runs either on batteries, or you can buy various different adapters seperately. What's good about it is, you can buy optional cooling cartridge freezer packs that slot into the fan and blow the very cold air around. It comes under Deluxe thermostatic dog crate fan - and there's a $ conversion bit at the top of the page....:) Sally + Harry x |
