| Hair/grooming advice? Hello everyone, I've started to notice that Simba's hair feels really dried and getting knotted all the time. I know that he has very fine hair. He is almost 5 months, and I am aware that his adult coat in coming in now. Is there anything I can do so it is not so dried? I do use a puppy shampoo and conditioner (top paw shampoo and conditioner), and I brush him everyday. Advice please! Thank you |

| Kong makes a 'softening' shampoo that helps manage dry and knotted hair. The reason we use this, and not other shampoos that have been recommended is because I don't want to pay for shipping on SHAMPOO! This can be purchased at Petsmart or PETCO and is reasonably priced. However, you can also by a detangling spray for after the bath that will help soften-- consider it a 'leave in conditioner'. But, each Yorkie is different... you may have to try a couple of brands before you find one that works for your baby.

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Do you use detangling spray? I use that on Katie Scarlett when she has a tangle and it works great. I usually spray the knot and pull it apart with my fingers. Then I slowly try to brush it out without pulling. We have used 2 detanglers: PetHead and Yorkie Splash & Shine kind, Yorkie Sheen. We like both of them. I want to try that Chris Christensen Ice on Ice kind next. Detangler really helps us.

| I personally do not like the 'pearl-y orange-y' Top Paw puppy shampoo...and I bought the large bottle of it , nor do I like (I think it's their brand) oatmeal shampoo. I am trying others out right now because I cannot get the clear no-tears vet formulated shampoo I have used for many years any more. I found the oatmeal shampoo from PetSmart dried their hair, so I used coconut oil to re-condition it...fed it to them...rubbed tiny bits on their hair...and they both are silky. I also like to be able to get their shampoo locally, so I have returmed to my former haunts...breeder feed farm and supply stores, Tractor Supply, etc...for Cowboy Magic and Mane 'n Tail. Both lines have great shampoos, conditioners, and detangler/shine products, so I want to see if they work on Brody's and Mia's hair. So far, I have tried only the Cowboy Magic Rosewater shampoo (I test 1 product at a time) but even without the conditioner and detangler/shine spray, his coat was magnificent! His hair is very fine and silky, and some products don't seem to 'work' well on it, where Mia's hair seems to 'accept' a broader range of products...but the Cowboy Magic shampoo gave his hair body and shine but left it clean and soft and silky so I am pleased at this point. I mixed maybe 1 tablespoon into solution in a 'candy making' squeeze bottle of water. I was interested in it because it is formulated for hard water, is concentrated, uses herbals, and is a USA product. Mane 'n Tail I have used before on my hair and my dogs' and loved it for both. They have a detangler product that is unscented, which I also like, that is well recommended. I live 'in the heart of Florida horse country' so getting equine and cross-breed products is super easy for me. Organic, virgin coconut oil should be available in any health food store or maybe even your local supermarket, and you can eat and cook with it yourself, too. Good luck!

| thank you VERY much for ur advice... I do feel that the shampoo and conditioner is drying out his hair. I'll start with the coconut oil first. What are your takes on olive oil for making thier hair shiny? Thank you all again for your advice! |

| You received some really good advice. Personally, I think you have to try different products to know what's right for your morkie. Every dog is different. With Tatiana, I approach her skin and coat in two ways -- her diet and what I physically do with her skin and coat. I think healthy skin and coat starts from the inside out (just like humans). With coconut oil, I have Tatiana EAT it (I add it to her food). I also add fish oil, too. With physically maintaining Tatiana, I do not put a lot of products on her. I find that it irritates her, and creates a build-up on her coat. This includes detangling products. What works with Tatiana is using a mild, fragrance-free conditioner, and plenty of rinsing. I have yet to find a shampoo that won't irritate her (and I've tried mild ones). I bath her once of week. I brush her out every day. Her skin and coat are in good shape. Again, this may not work for your morkie. I'm just sharing what works for Tatiana. |

| Many of the regular pet shampoos and conditioners use detergents and other chemicals that strip the coat and skin. Some ad conditioners to help replace the natural oils their product has stripped from the skin. It's like over processing your hair and then conditioning it to make up for the damage that has been done. I would use an all natural product. A shampoo with a separate conditioner. An additional spray conditioner for between baths would also be advisable. I use the Yorkie Splash and Shine shampoo and conditioner along with the conditioning spray. Yorkie Splash and Yorkie Shine | Yorkie Shampoo and Yorkie Conditioner There are other all natural products out there as well. You are dealing with a puppy coat that is in transition. Some of the puppy coat is coming out as the new coat is coming in and that causes knots or mats. Use a metal grooming comb everyday before brushing giving special attention to under the legs, behind the ears and the rear areas and belly. Long coated breeds require special attention daily. Even if you keep him cut short the coat still needs daily combing to keep it in tip top shape. |

| for me, Coconut oil is number one. Ziggy also had dry skin and hair and no shampoo/conditioner helped, started on Coconut oil and I am now never without it. I find it keeps the hair soft and shiny but not oily. I had a little spray for him with about 5 parts water and 1 part coconut oil. i use this when grooming and every second day. im very happy with it hope that helps

Hot oil hair treatments on humans using olive oil are well known, and olive oil is rich is Omega 6 but deficient in Omega 3...and you must use virgin olive oil for any benefit other than "shine" on the hair...oiled hair "shines" due to the oil, not because the hair is necessarily healthy. Health starts 'inside' the body and is reflected by the outside. Refined and/or hydrogenated products are 'dead' as far as anything beneficial left in the oil since heat destroys EFA molecular chains, converting them to a trans-isomer molecular structure ("trans-fat"..."trans-fatty acid"), so if you use them just for shine they might even make the hair 'sticky' or 'gummy' feeling due to their oxidation rate. If you've every fried in a refined or partially-hydrogenated oil and felt that 'sticky' feeling where the oil splashes up onto the top edge of the pan, or on the basket of a deep fryer, you'll understand what I mean...and your fur baby will need a bath sooner if that happens 'cuz the hair will collect dirt more quickly and hold onto it and it will be harder to get the hair clean the next bath-time as well. Just my 2-cents...for what little that's worth...

| I wouldn't use Olive oil JMO. I love coconut oil. I just started using it and can already tell a difference I put some in a jar and dilute it with water to spray on Georgie. I got a 16 oz container on amazon for around $10. It will take forever to use it all.

| I agree that healthy skin and coat starts from within. Check the kind of food you are feeding first. Make sure he is not getting treats that you buy in department stores and pet stores. Omega 3's are awesome for the coat. I also agree that the organic virgin cold pressed coconut oil as a great supplement for skin and coat improvements. Use the best food available to you and add your omega 3's and don't strip the skin and coat with harsh ingredients in your grooming products.
