| Fresh veggies and fruit for treats? (in moderation of course) Right now,I wanted to start praising Milo & Bella for using the potty pads.We have tried clapping (the kids mainly lol) and petting them afterwards, but any exitement seems to make Milo very nervous, and he hides if we react at all..yet he isnt using the pads as often as I´d like as this point (it´s early days,I know). I thought about giving them a small treat whenever I see them use the pad,but I remember buying puppy treats for my other yorkies and I really wasnt fond of any kind or brand. Some would make their poop smell AWFUL,give them gas or turn their poop funny colours, and I really dont want to be giving them anything too filling or artifitial between meals. Would it be ok to give them small peices of carrott? (boiled so its not rock hard),peas (one at a time),apple etc? I´d feel much better going with something fresh and healthy. Is it ok to give them small peices of things like this at 2 months old? Years back,I tried using boiled chicken as a treat for the same thing, and that blew up in my face, because Lady never wanted kibble again after trying real meat,so I dont want to go with meat either.. What do you use as treats for your puppies?

| I'd use Cheerios (plain) or Gerbers Graduate Puffs... they won't mess up their systems as much as raw or cooked veggies at their age.... Treating during potty training definitely helps.

| Sweet potato treats are good to give, too! My boys love them so much, I think they'd sell me into slavery to get a lifetime supply, lol! |

| I give mine raw baby carrots, sometimes pieces, sometimes a whole carrot, and they are crazy about them. They eat them about the same as dogs eat a dog biscuit. They're crunchy but not rock hard. In fact they get more excited about raw carrots than any kind of meat or dog treats. If you are just looking for healthy dog treats, there are tons and tons of brands that make organic or healthy dog treats. About clapping when they use the potty pad--I think that would discourage them from using it. Clapping is something I would do to startle them into stopping a bad behavior. |

| My girls favorites are carrots (raw) and peas. Just FYI, here's a link for safety's sake: Dangerous Foods That Dogs Should Never Eat - WebMD Slideshow

| I personally would use something that he values. Kinda like my kids, if I rewarded them with some peas or carrots, they wouldn't be very motivated. If I rewarded them with a dish of ice cream on the other hand.... Now if your pup absolutely loves peas or carrots then fine. Mine love boiled chicken and liver and cheese. Just a tiny piece is really all they need.... |

| The right Treat Remember when treating as a reward, use tiny pea sized treats. The idea is for them to finish it in one or two bites. Apple, sweet potato, carrot, and green beans are favorites. Never feed them grapes or rasins they are poison to dogs. Low fat string cheese is also good and we use home made jerky too. We Clap to startle puppies or to distract them, mostly when they are chewing something they should not be chewing. We also use clapping later in training to get their attention when we are teaching recall or retrieving games. I would not use clapping or loud praise sounds with a young puppy. Best wishes and congrats on your sweet baby. Yorkie Talk a great place to learn new ideas and get questions answered. Teresa & the gang

Of course, this did set me up, as she is now almost a year & 1/2 old and still expects a treat if I'm home when she goes potty. I don't mind this though. I'll treat for life if it keeps my home clean.

| I had a hard time motivating Abby until I tried Honey Nut Cheerios, Ziva can't stand them but Abby potties and then comes running over for one- I put them in a clean parmesan cheese container and shake them and say "YAY"(my son read somewhere that "yay"sounds happy and positive- even at 5am) Ziva has a green bean limit of 3-4 a day otherwise she will randomly throw up the next day (peas n carrots are too rough on her tummy altho she loves romaine) |

| Kiko loves raw carrots. I switched to using them instead of prepackaged dog treats a few months ago because the vet said Kiko was getting too heavy. |

I might try this with Dexter. Thankfully, he'll do anything for a treat and loves things that make noise. | |

| You should always praise them and give them a treat when they go pottyin the right place it. I get wanting to keep your dog healthy but I think if I am peeing where you wanted me too and I got an apple I would pee right on your foot next time lol give me a snickers when I'm good dang it lol. (no I do not recommend giving a dog a snickers)
