| Puppy Mill shut down Another puppy mill was shut down yesterday in Allegan County in Michigan. A woman went to a so called breeder's home and saw hundreds of little puppies all dirty and scraggly after she answered an ad. She did buy one puppy, cleaned the poor thing up and brought it to the vet and then promptly reported it to county officials who raided the home and found 350 puppies in a small kennel that were all in poor shape. The puppies were all taken to several vets in the area who cleaned them up and are then giving them to a no kill shelter for adoption. These little pups were just adorable yet pitiful and brought tears to my eyes. The "breeder" will be charged with animal cruelty. I hope they throw the book at her.

| Puppy Mill Shutdown No, they weren't sent to a "no kill shelter", they were dispersed in several different yorkie rescue groups all across the country. This happened yesterday and the rescues were scrambling to find foster homes for them.

| Thanks for the update. I was only going by what was reported by the early local news. They showed the puppies too but they all weren't yorkies. They are all definitely better out of that awful kennel.

| According to a local paper, most of the dogs were Shihtzus (sp?).

| This morning they reported on TV that the dogs are at the Allegan Humane Society and will be up for adopted after they are cleaned up and some broken bones set. The couple will face four years in prison and 500 hours of community service. Not enough in my book.

| I posted the news links on this story below This type of situation makes me LIVID, because I can't help but wonder why it took so long for something to be done. This took place inside a small two bedroom house, it does not even sound like there were cages outside. Did they have any neighbors, family, friends, what about people that bought the dogs from them, no one said anything?? I could be wrong but in reading the story it doesn not sound like they were running a true puppy mill type of business selling to pet stores and brokers (or at least not at the end) so someone must have been to their home. What about the county animal control agency, that we pay taxes to support, when did they find out about this, one story says they were working with them to reduce the numbers, for how long ??? !!!! Then the follow up story or some of the comments said they knew for just a week. I feel both of these people have some type of mental illness that made them incapable of controlling a situation that may of started from a desire to sell puppies for money. Think about it, they lived in a small two bedroom house surrounded by the urine and feces of 350 stinking sick dogs, what type of people are capable of living like that other than mentaly sick, animal hoarder type of people. I am not sticking up for them, I am just disgusted that either no one knew about this or if they did they choose to turn a blind eye. Also when it comes to adoption I know I would not be first in line, who knows what type of expensive medical issues you would be facing down the line since they were most likely inbred over and over again. Just a very sad sad situation and I commend the many volunteers that are working tirelessly with these puppies and dogs. Aside from what happens to the couple I sure hope there is an investigation done on how this went on for so long. | I found some more stories on this, perhaps some were not kept in the house, it's hard to tell from the stories, but I did read that in 2010 they were visited by Animal Control, and asked to reduce the numbers.... it does not sound like they were visited again. They were also cited in 2005 when they lived in Grand Rapids (different county) for I believe not having a kennel license, but yet not much could be done because GR did not have an ordinance against how many pets one could have in a home! I know there are new animal laws that are trying to get passed in MI, this has made me decide to find out more about them and see how I might be able to get involved.
