| Talk about food and bones to chew on....... I feed Maggie Royal Canin Yorkie formula (dry). She ends up eating about 3/8 cup of it/day and she gets boiled chicken breast mixed in, about 1/8 cup or less, just enough to entice her to eat....It's a bad habit, but it works... Recently I thought to try a different brand of food hoping she would love it and I could wean her off the chicker...nope..I tried the Blue Buffalo small dog formula, it's like a pink/purple bag, so now I just use 1/4 of Royal Canin and 1/8 B buf and the chicken. She eats the best if we just feed her once day and hasn't had any treats. She is almost 10 pounds. When she was at the vet last fall, about 1 3/4 yrs old I asked about her teeth and the vet said they looked really clean and white. So maybe the dry food is helping keep them nice. Every now and then I attempt a tooth brushing, but she squirms and I'm afraid i will squish her so she gets away. Then I put the toothpaste on a toy or chew thing and hope she gets some on her teeth. I read it's the enzymes and not the brushing action that do the work. She loves to chew bully sticks and her tennis balls and toys. She has some rawhide stuff she chews from time to time. Her favorite treat is homemade chicken jerky with or w/ sweet potato. What kind of bones are best? I see people mention raw bones, but that grosses me out. Do I want raw bone stuff on my carpets? Can't raw bones make them sick? Where do I get raw bones? |

| I think teeth brushing is very important and eating dry food doesn't really clean them. I started Callie as a puppy and she could care less when I brush her teeth now but I always give her a treat afterwards and talk to her while doing it. I am a big fan of grain free food but when I get the flu and my anemia under control I am really going to look into home cooking because I imagine there is a lot they put into dog food that they legally do not have to tell us about. We also use bully sticks and Callie loves them like crazy. I would be very very careful with rawhide because it can cause blockages and with any bone make sure you are there when they are chewing it. I could never ever do raw bones freaks me out and I could not imagine the germs that get in her beard and on the floor from that.

| Rawhide, and most everything else they sell at Walmart like department stores is dangerous for dogs. It is very bad for their digestion and many dogs end up choking on parts of the rawhide. I give Gracie the regular sized bully sticks that are 12" long. I take them away from her when she has gotten it down to 4". They can't bite off pieces of the bully stick. All they can do is soften the end up and as they do it cleans the teeth somewhat. You still need to clean them though. I feed Gracie a grain free raw diet and she has done very well on it. |

| If I were going to feed (no expert here at all) raw bones, I would get the knuckle bones or bigger so they didn't get choked. My vet told me she did not like rawhide. We do not give rawhide at all. I don't think they can digest it. Brushing or using the gel, I think, is real important. |
