Vaccines are not "routine" as some vets and some doctors will try to convince you. There are reactions, side effects and they are powerful agents which should not be given indiscriminately.

I mean Rabies is not like Polio, completely gone in this country right? There was just a case of a kitten with it around here. 60 people have to be treated for exposure. Yikes! Shelby's only reaction was a bump at the vac. site which went away after a couple weeks. If she was lethargic I would do the titer test as Kim suggested.

| My yorkies received their first rabies shot at 6 months old.. Then it is annually from then on.... I recently got the 3 year rabies shot for my yorkies who were due. The only reaction some of them have is the "bump" on their side for awhile.... a few of them have permanant circles that can be seen if you look closely when their hair is cut real short. I tend to agree that the "shots" that are "required" seem to effect these little ones way too much....

| I have to jump in here and talk about our state we live in Alabama !!! I am a "Damn Yankee" ...lol. (Michigander not returning) So, with that said I am from a northern part of the US and know that in the south it is totally different here. I have discussed this subject with my vet in Alabama of the rabies vaccinations and why they are given so often. I personally don't like it as I stated in my previous post on this thread, whether I like it or not is not the issue it is "Alabama Law"- every year ~Michigan's is every 3 years. I have since understood why?? coyote in my back yard, yes!!! Come up to the house, Yes. Are they afraid of me, NO!!!. Hearing Panthers screaming in the woods, Yes. Seeing a Bobcat once in a while, yes... Raccoons, armadillo,(sp?) squirrel ground and flying, chipmunks, to many many critters to list.(And don't get me started on the BUGS !!! lol) Do I watch my dogs resounding "All the time" Could a accident happen "You bet it could" Am I willing to take that chance, "Absolutely NOT!!!" I guess what I am saying is Alabama is a host for many variety of wild life. This state does not host the population that say, Florida, California or Michigan does. This puts us in a higher category for rabies (more area and higher wild life population), whether cases have been reported would be smaller due to population. Not to mention, It is a sad place for animals (no offense any Alabamians, not referring to you, here on YT) I can tell you so many times I see dogs dropped off with ribs sticking out their sides, starved. They will feed a cow, before a dog here. Many are what I call backyard dogs.... No vaccinations, no heartguard protection, flea & tick, or what we would consider basic care. It breaks my heart. My vet has made the comment to me that she wished more people in this state would take their pet in consideration the way I do. So, this is just not me making this statement. The wonderful thing about living in America we have choices... And we have to live by our choices and be accountable for those choices. All, I can say from here is I hope gcook your little girls is doing better today !!! Please keep us posted on how she is doing...

| When Maya got her rabies shot a few weeks ago, she could not use her leg for several hours. By the next morning she was fine..I would watch her limp..but not be overly concerned!

| Thank you so much Sue!!! Glad to see there is someone else in Alabama who understands! It is a scary thing to walk out to a coyote and have it look back dead at you. What are you suppose to do? "Shoo coyote...get out of here!" Ha ha ha. Actually, we seem to be having a REAL problem w/ them close to me. There is a new one dead on the side of the road everyday! There are some that live in on the mountain beside my house...Flash thinks it is her job to howl back at them. And let's not start on the mosquitos...you wouldn't catch me dead without heartworm prevention. I've traveled that road before...Thanks again! |

| why she got 2 shots She got 2 shots because the first shot at 1 year was 1/2 the dose and the 2nd shot 6 months later was the other 1/2 dose. Now she doesn't need another shot for 3 years. I wanted to let you know she is almost all better today.. Thankfully it passed and she is back to her normal self, after ~48 hours. |

| Lethergic after after Rabies My 6lb Yorkie experienced the same symptoms. When it came to giving my 3 lb Yorkie her rabies,I was concerned. my vet added a anitiflamatory med with the injection and she had no problems.. I recomend this to any small Yorkie owner !!! |
