| Donating YT 4000 Club Member | while we are in the "reputable" subject, I heard of a breeder that bred two merles and got a double merle and that product won best of BREED at Wesmister this year, so it depends on every persons opinion of what reputable means to their lines... so I take "REPUTABLE" with a grain of salt lately, when it comes to dog breeding... in order to breed small or tiny you must breed small risking the life of the dam, which in my opinion is as bad as breeding two merles.. just my humble opinion on the subject of Reputable breeders.. I rather call myself an experience HOnesT breeder.. hugs, a brief explanation of BLue merle.. (wikipedia) Merle is actually a heterozygote of an incompletely dominant gene.[7] If two such dogs are mated, on the average one quarter of the puppies will be "double merles", which is the common term for dogs homozygous for merle,[8] and a high percentage of these double merle puppies could have eye defects and/or be deaf. Knowledgeable breeders who want to produce merle puppies mate a merle with a non-merle dog; roughly half the puppies will be merles without the risk of vision or hearing defects associated with double merle dogs.[9] In January 2006 scientists at Texas A&M University announced the discovery of a mobile genetic unit called a retrotransposon, responsible for the merle mutation in dogs. |

| To me, a reputable breeder is one that breeds to improve the breed and the health of the dog per AKC standards for the Yorkie, testing breeding stock for the desired health certifications.

| I don't see any reason to neuter the male. He could be bred to a larger breed if someone wanted some mixed breed puppies, say a poodle. Just a thought. |

| The male should be neutered. Though I'm sure he's adorable - he's way over the breed standard. The last thing we need are more mixed-breed puppies being brought into this world only to end up in shelters. Especially when the folks doing the breeding have no idea what they are doing and what they will be producing.

| No one should breed mixed breed dogs there are many to many in shelters for that.

| How many people on this forum have a mixed breed dog? I think it's a great idea for some one wanting to have a litter of puppies there is no reason the dogs can't be mixed breed. There are far many more mixed breed dogs in this country than purebred ones. |

| Don't call me names, it is beneath you. If someone has families lined up to take the pups I see no reason for not having a litter. I am not talking about having puppies just for the sake of having them. |
