| Help I just bought a 8month old male yorkie puppy 4pound from a breeder in Staten Island,NY..I had him flown to me on Nov 20th. Now he is sick, he has never acted right since I have had him. I know it takes time for a dog to adjust and I already have another yorkie(male) This new dog always sleeps not the least bit active and when he isn't laying on the dog bed we are holding him. But, after I had him a few days he started with diarreha, drooling, vomiting (I haven't changed dog food) sliding on the floor and pushing his head into furniture and now when he is sliding on the floor pushing with his head sometimes my other yorkie walks by and my new guy goes after him and starts a fight it's like he is out for blood, this has happened 4 times now. I have to keep the new guy crated if someone is not in the room with him for fear he will do real harm to my other yorkie. I have had him twice to the vets they have given him two types of medication and a shot. They also told me to only give him yogurt and cottage cheese and no other food because they our thinking it could be a liver shunt. I have contacted the breeder and he is blaming me for everything. He is telling me the dog was healthy there so it's my fault and if the dog dies I have to have a autopsy and I have to pay for it and then he will decide if he will refund my money. Also when I took my dog to the vets she said he has a crptorchid which he never told me about. The breeder stated in his ad he would make a good stud dog. Which I wasn't going to use him for a stud just a pet but he should have told me about the problem. He is now telling me a crpytorchid is no big deal. In New York State where I am from we have a lemon law for pets. I am very upset because this breeder is blaming me . I have to take the dog back to the vets tomorrow and my vet is going to call the breeders vet. I am worried about the agression problem my other yorkie is so afraid now. Please no flaming...I am looking for advice Nancy |

| Oh brother it sounds like youve got a real loser of a breeder. If the pup has liver shunt I would take the pup back and demand your money back so you can go get a pup from a more ethical breeder.

| Do you have a contract with the breeder?. If so you are gave a stated number of days or hours to take the puppy to the vet to be evaluated for being healthy? If so did he pass your vets health exam. Did you vet do a exam checking for worms and etc.? It does seem to be a bit early to jump to the conclusion of liver shunt problems. I am concerend about the baby lethargic. Some yorkie babies are aressive in their play or towards an older dog who they are scared of. Do you see any of this in the new babies behavior? |

| Help The vet did check for worms and everything is fine. My other yorkie baby(Desi) is 4months old and the new one is 8months old(Sam). When Sam goes after my other one he grabs him by the neck and shakes him and and poor Desi just cries and tries to get away . I have to separate them..lastnight I was bite by Sam. It's just a very scary ordeal. |

| Nancy, I am sorry for what you are going through. Would you be comfortable telling the group who the breeder is? seller is? Maybe someone in this group had problems also with the same breeder and could give advise.

from his symptoms like drooling, sliding and pushing his head, it sounds like a liver shunt case. these do cause behavorial problems such as aggression, that could be what you are dealing with. Liver shunts are expensive, risky, and difficult, but if you wish to try and tough it out there are ways. good luck, i wish you all the best

| "crptorchid" (cryptorchid). You are referring to "undescended testicles?" My vet said that this and bad knees are common problems she runs into with puppys from "not so reputable breeders." And then possibly a "liver shunt." I'm sorry about all these problems. No one wants to get caught up in a big fight, but I certainly hope all your puppies problems end up back in the lap of the breeder where they belong. Get documentation and letters from your vet - etc.......and go see Judge Judy!!!!!! You'd win - hands-down!!!! Sorry - Carol Jean |

First let me say I am so sorry that you are going through this. But I am afraid that he could be exibiting classic signs of a liver shunt. In my opinion you have 2 options. Option 1- if you have not yet grown emotionally attached return the dog immediately. Option 2- If you have grown emotionally attached to the dog then have his bile acid's tested IMMEDIATELY. I can tell you from experience (my Matise had Liver shunt surgery 1 1/2 months ago) it is a very long and very expensive road you are about to embark on. If he has a shunt he requires immediate medication and special food, his life may depend on it. If you do choose option 2 then I can give you more information and give you help in any way possible as I have been down that road and so far Matise is doing well and the Dr. is optimistic on his full recovery. I have spent many, many hours, days and weeks researching liver shunts, causes, teatments, prognosis and doctors. "Clinical signs are often seen at a young age and include small stature, poor muscle development, behavioral abnormalities (circling, disorientation, unresponsiveness, staring into space, head pressing), seizures, and quiet demeanor. Other less common signs include drinking or urinating too much, apparent blindness, diarrhea, and vomiting. In some animals the signs are associated with eating protein. Other animals are diagnosied when they take a long time recovering from anesthestics (i.e. barbiturates) or sedatives (i.e. acepromazine). Some animals show no signs until they are older, when they develop bladder and kidney infections and stones." Quote:
On a side note they are doing studies now on whether or not cryptorchidism and liver shunts are related. My Matise had cryptorchid testicals and a liver shunt. They beleive they have a direct correlation. you can click on the links in my signature to learn more about liver shunts. Hope this helps.

| Thank you everyone Thank you everyone for all your emails. He seems alittle better the vet has him on medication. I am going to the Attorney Generals office tomorrow. I have all the forms filled out. I emailed the breeder and he said since he is a hobby breeder he doesn't quailify for the lemon law. And now he won't answer any of my emails...I hope something good comes out of it. Nancy |

| I know that this is an old thread however i must vent! i purchased my Lola Belle from John Weber and in my opinion he is a back yard breeder, when i brought her home last year i took her to the vet for her check up and turns out she had coccidia i contacted him immediately to tell him and he brushed me off. Silly me thought he would be concerned especially since he had other dogs. She also has terrible allergies and poor baby has been given different shampoos and lotions and sprays and currently on prednisone. We also have her on a grain free food I am so angry at myself for not checking up on this guy but i am a big believer that what's meant to be shall be. Lola was meant to be my baby but it is just so hard to see her itch. She is getting better but i suggest to people that are going to purchase a new pup to research the breeder ask questions and ask for references. I am so glad for YT i have learned plenty on here.
