| My mom's dog does this too and her vet said it was the reverse sneezing thing. He told her to just gently rub her throat and it seems to work. We also notice she does this when she gets nervous/excited. |

| Our Graysee has had both. The reverse sneezing is just that: it's like they're taking air INTO their lungs forcefully, rather than pushing it OUT! Graysee gets it when she gets excited, typically. The hairball thing is also accurate; unless your Yorkie NEVER licks the floor, or the carpet/rug, he/she is going to lap up some hair, as they ALL shed a LITTLE bit, especially when they shake. And, unless you vacuum the house 2-3 times a day, you're going to have some dog hair, as well as people hair, lying around here and there. Once they get that hair in their throats, it's just like if you or I had done so; they want to GET IT OUT! And it is hacking, gagging, whatever you want to call it, until they feel that they've removed the offender from their throat. |

| Well, I'm almost 100% sure it's not a hairball! Cats get hair balls because they groom themselves with their comb like tongue and then swallow the loose hair. Your dog may just have had something in it's airway but was able to clear it or it could have been some reverse sneezing. Gracie usually only does the reverse sneeze when she is all excited though. When you need to get your dog to drink you can offer her a little milk. I also find that if you have one of those drinking tops on a water bottle and pour the water slowly into a dish they tend to like drinking from a flowing water source. My Shih Tzu loved to drink from a small trickle of water coming from the bath tub faucet. I hope your little one is feeling better and does not have anymore episodes of this. |

| Our Clover now aged 6 months, over the last couple of days has gagged and occasionally brought a bit of sick up! She's been eating fine and seems normal! This morning she was sick and there was hair in with it, after reading these posts I think she's a hair eater as she eats just about anything anyway and therefore does get fur balls as such! |

| Snoopy makes a gagging sound as well, but that's probably because he's like a vacuum cleaner, always licking the floor for crumbs |

| In all seriousness the hacking can also be acid reflux or due to allergies and should be monitored. Yes, I added a y to hair when reading the title...

| I can confirm that they can get hair balls if they steal and eat the hair you have swept up from you super shedder dog (her brother) and then plays keep away from Mommy so swallows it. 1 hour later = throw up a hair ball right in the middle of my bed

| YT 500 Club Member | I have a new puppy 5 months old and he has been doing this since I got him. It is a real quick gag or cough and last a split second. When he is playing with toys or sometimes when he drinks. The Vet said maybe Collapse trachea which I hope it is not. Does yours still do it? |
