| Hi, welcome to YT. We would never consider doing our own shots. God forbid they have a reaction to it, you would want to be at the vet.

| Shots Yes I have done it both ways and right now wish I had not taken my parti litter into the vet for first boosters. There was a dog with parvo there and now my little girl is not feeling well and has loose stools so of course I am trying to decide if it is the reaction to the shot or what? To me it is almost worth it to give your fist couple of shots yourself and give them some immunity before introducing them to the vet, unless of course they are ill and need to go in. I may change my practice.

| Giving Puppy Shots A lot of people in the south give their own shots and then take them in for the rabies. If I am keeping a puppy I always give my own. This latest little incident with mine will probably have me giving mine at home, or at least a couple so that I dont have to worry about what they come in contact with at the Vets Office before they are fully immunized. I dont even allow mine outside until they have all their shots. I am furious that they didnt have the dog isolated.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Some breeders give their own shots, but I doubt if it would be cost effective unless you are doing multiple dogs. Many breeders just don't want to expose them to a vet's office that young. Joey's breeder gave him his shots, and she said that she didn't recommend it for everyone because shots must be refrigerated, and used before expiration date and some people would take shortcuts to save money. Unless you've been trained, I wouldn't even consider it, you also have to know what signs to look for if there's any duress, as well as how to give the shot to avoid bruising and hair loss.

| When we go into the vet for a new born and momma check, we keep everyone in the car until they signal us to come inside...we put shoe covers over our shoes.....we go straight to a room, and I spray the exam table with Vircon, and I cover the table with a sheet I have brought from home. I put a face towel on the scale so no baby touches the scales. I supply my own thermometer. I have all my own exam equipment for the vet's use (being a nurse that was the easy part). When we are finished examining the momma and the babies, everyone goes straight back to the car with my son, the sheet and towel are bagged for immediate wash when we get home, and shoe covers are removed at the car and bagged for disposal. I take ABSOLUTELY NO chances....and yes, I give all my own shots, except rabies. My meds do not come from the feed store, and they are kept refridgerated at the correct temp. Sick dogs and their owners all all in the waiting area, and they all LOVE puppies...they all want to pet and look and see and .....NO!!!!! I have discovered it much easier for me, to go straight from the car to an exam room, then straight back out to the car. |

| No. A DVM must be on site for my dogs to be vaccinated. I wouldn't purchase from a breeder that gives vaccines either. There are so many brands, variables, and schedules floating around..plus the safety risk. I've seen many bad protocols by breeders online. No thanks. I don't consider it anymore acceptable than vaccinating a child without somebody on site trained in doing so. Some vets won't accept vaccines given at home and insist on redoing them..as they should.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | My son is a vet tech, so now we do our own shots, before I use to go to the vet for everything and now thanks to him I only go for the necessary, like the rabies and health certificates other than that I don't have to take my babies to a vet, I know a lot of breeders that do their own, but A LOT of research is advised. if you have never done a vaccine or have a mentor that can teach you I advise to talk to your vet I know some vets have taught some breeders around here.. hugs, |
