Flying and a Yorkie? Hi everyone! I'm new! I adopted a 1.8 pound, 1 year old Yorkie about a week ago and she's already the apple of my eye. I'm going to be a bridesmaid in a friends wedding in August. I have to fly half-way across the country for this wedding. I'm in Louisiana and she's in California. We're flying Southwest and I found out I can bring Phoebe in a carry-on bag inside the cabin as long as she "fits" in a certain sized dog bag, which she will because she's tiny. I'd like to bring her with us and stay in a pet friendly hotel. I was just wondering if any of you have ever flown with your pets inside the cabin before and how did it go? She tends to whine if she's around me but not able to sit on me. I wont be able to take her out of her carried from what I understand. I don't want to be "that person" who has a baby/dog/etc who drives people crazy on the whole flight. Any input, advice, or tips? Thanks so much! -J

Just flew Southwest 2 weeks ago with my 4lb 8 month old yorkie named Jersey to NJ from St. Louis. It was only about a 2 hour flight and your baby is much smaller. Make sure that you bring nutrical and get water after you go through security. You should go to the section here about traveling with your yorkie. Before I flew with him I think that I read everything in that section. I posted how my trip on Southwest went. It's title is My Trip to NJ with Jersey. You can PM me if you have any particular questions about flying Southwest if you like. Good luck!

Also make sure that you thoroughly check out your "pet friendly" hotel. I was going to Kansas City a week ago to pick up my yorkie that I adopted and stayed at a Residence in because they allow pets. Well they do BUT you have to pay a non refundable $100 for cleaning!!!!!!! I inquired before I stayed (anonymously) and told them that I found that ridiculous for one night for a 5 lb dog that does not even shed. Then I sneeked her in! So make sure you check the conditions ahead of time.

Thanks for the tips! I have a 10 year old chihuahua (have had him since he was a baby) and we've traveled with him before and stay at the Red Roof Inn. Not the nicest place ever, but it's always pet-friendly and there are no crazy pet deposits. They're equivalent to maybe a Comfort Inn or something like that in my experience. -J

We traveled with our Yorkie Hope before she past away. We stayed at the La Quinta Inn. It is pet friendly and you don't have to pay a deposit or fee. The one in our town is not so nice and all the rooms open from the outside so I was alittle worried but this one was beautiful! It even had a jacuzzi. They like to keep all of the pet owners on the first floor but it isn't forced but it is nice to have the exit door that you can go in and out. They let you keep the dog in the hotel even if you aren't there (many that I called would not even let you keep a crated dog unattened) The staff was very pleasant and asked for a cell number just in case the dog barked alot so they could let you know. It was a wonderful first experience with traveling with a dog and I think it was less than a $100.

Haven't flown with my guys yet, but did stay in a Crown Plaza hotel in Jacksonville last month and was very happy with the experience. I paid a $75 one time sanitation fee, but it was worth it to be able to walk my two Yorkies in and out without trying to hide them. Both guys behaved perfectly -- not a single accident -- and the staff was so nice to them. My advice? ...go ahead and pay the pet fee and enjoy the stay. It's still cheaper than boarding, and a lot more fun to have them with me.
