I keep a can of pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) on hand in case of poopy problems; also look online for lists of foods that are toxic to dogs (of course I can't find such a link so far) and print it off - just in case! No matter how careful we are, these little guys can grab a dropped piece of food off the floor in a flash! You need to know whether a call/drive to the vet is in order.

Congratulations! I remember how hard the wait was :-)

Woo hoo!! How exciting!!

I personally would add some kind of car-crate for the journey home (she said from bitter experience!!!). Harry was very wriggly and sicky, and although Andy was cuddling him - it was a very uncomfortable trip for all (and distracting!!).

Congratulations! Sally + Harry x

Congrats to your mom! I'm sure she'll love having another baby to take care of!! Thank you all for the suggestions, they're helping me so much! I'm gonna get some Nutrical, pumpkin puree for anti-diahrreal, a softer brush, and make a magnet for the emergency info.

I already took a whole week off work to be with her constantly the first couple days...LOL! So excited.

Does anyone have any tips for organization? I live in an apartment and closet room is sparse!

I live in an apartment also. I hate not having anywhere for her to run around but we take weekend trips to the park or the mother in laws yard and daily walks! I bought a hook set to go on the wall for clothes and a medium sized bin for a toy box and then a bathroom stand for our grooming supplies super excited for u!!

Under the bed clear sided storage boxes ... works wonders for us.

To your list:
1. Pet Insurance - investigate and determine which plan you want to go with.
2. Have a plan to either make or buy some warm sweaters for your pup... I'm not sure how cold it is in texas.
3, Emergency first aid kit. The library has I believe an article on this.
4. Know what food the breeding is feeding ... look it up on line, and if you want to change do that after pup is in house for more than one wk and maybe two wks.
Print off instructions/knowledge about "what constitutes an emergency".
5. Spray attachment if your kitchen sink tap doesn't have one. It is so much easier to use the spray attachment to wash.
6. Lots of soft towels for drying and cradling after washing; how about a blow dryer?
7. You can if you wish boil up some chicken, cook some rice, freeze both, in case your pup has a case of nervous stomach and diarrhea. Freeze it for use when needed.
8. Ear cleaner
9. Eventually a pet clipper if you plan on grooming your dog yourself.

Thank you!! I share my apartment with four people, too...college student, bleh. Good thing they all love dogs. We have a dog park right down the street and my boyfriend and I actually go to the park almost every day to run. Can't wait for her to be all vaccinated so we can bring her around with us!

I have shelves in my closet for her stuff, I'm using baby hangers for her clothes, and we are going to get a stand for the bathroom Her exercise pen is in our bedroom for now!

Yes start them on the exercise pen the first night. We got Ella when she was 16 weeks and was used to sleeping in the bed so our first night was horrible. We ended up putting her in the bed with us because she barked the entire night and we had extremely rude neighbors that complained about us all the time over nothing! So we have had a bed partner ever since and now we don't mind a bit... But I have told my mom she has got to crate train because we are now having trouble pooping outside an on the potty pads:/

We are going to use a cup to bathe her in the sink..until she's bigger and can go in the tub with the detachable showerhead Hope it's not too much of a mess. Thank you for these suggestions, I have done alot more than what I wrote out in my original list. I want to be a great mama!

To make sure I have the ear part correct though...

When I bathe her, I need to put cotton balls in her ears so no water gets in, and then use an ear cleanser to clean them, right?

Yes, when Zhoie was a pup, I bought it a Petco. When she had her severe shoulder injury when she was 6 mos, it came in handy in route to the E.R. in MD.

I have since found that injury is what caused her AAI because it shattered her den between her C1 & C2 disk. I still blame myself for not being more diligent in finding and knowing it.

I know in my heart...I will never drop the ball like that again. Good luck with your sweet baby....enjoy, there is nothing quite like yorkie love!!! Be sure to post picture of that baby!

The books you bought, read them all!

Bookmark YorkieTalk and read on here frequently.
Especially the educational info (stickies) provided in each topic forum.

Set up a checking account just for your pup, seriously, put money in it from time to time, use it to shop etc., this will ensure that IF theres ever a Yorkie emergency you will be prepared and its a good way of keeping YOUR Yorkie spending in check. I use my account for all shopping, clothes, food, toys, etc. as well. We've had to take loans out because our Yorkies have "special needs" but we still keep that account going.

Plan for alot of fun!

Good Luck, don't forget to post pics!

You can put the cotton balls in ears, until you feel comfy with the bathing procedure. And yes to use an ear cleanser after bath, and anytime you go in swimming with pup.

I'm more concerned you keep water out of her nostrils; there is a trick to that. First you can start off with a ketchup squeeze bottle type thingie, and rinse for top of bridge of nose downards and away from nostril openings. Then you can learn to direct the shower spray the same way.

It seems you have a good list. Here another one, maybe you will find other things to add to yours:
A dog crate
Wire playpen
Pee pads
Pet stain remover or dog urine cleaning products
Toys
Grooming supplies
Puppy food
Food and water bowls
Collar, leash and harness
Poop bags
Training treats
If you want to read more about every item read this new puppy checklist.
