| New to YT & the Yorkie world Good afternoon, I tried to post yesterday but it never showed up so I am trying again. I am a new yorkie mommy, by little princess name is DG which is short for DaddyzGurl, she was bor on 12/14/11. Being that I am a newbie I have a few questions about her. 1. DG's mommy is registered but her daddy is not, what affect does that have on her? 2. DG's breeders would not dock the puppies tails, so should I do it or should I leave it long? 3. At what age will her hair start to grow out and she will begin to look like a true yorkie? 4. DG's air does not stand up, will they or will I have to tape them? I look forward to the group and I look forward to learning all that I can about my little girl. |

| Hi! Welcome to Yorkie Talk! To answer your questions : If only one of her parents is registered, then she can't be registered. The breeder actually has to register the litter with the AKC and then give each new family paperwork to register their puppy. If DG's tail wasn't docked as a newborn, she will have a long tail for life. After 3 days of age it's considered an amputation and would be cruel to do to her. I'm sure she looks adorable with her full tail She's only about 8 weeks old, which is very young. She will just gradually grow her coat. It takes time. Some grow their coat quickly, others are very slow. My Belle has only had one very little trim and her coat is still a few inches from the floor at 15 months old. I wouldnt worry about taping her ears at such a young age. Just shave the hair on the top third of her ears and they will start to stand up. Enjoy your little girl.

| Welcome to YT. You have gotten some good advice so far. If the ears are not standing by 10 weeks, I would suggest tapeing them. We have many threads you can check out.

| Hi! Congratulations! I personally like the long, natural Yorkie tail. Plenty of Yorkies do not have docked tails. Docking is not allowed in some countries. There are shows in Europe on YouTube where you can see some long tail Yorkies in competition. Brody's is long and it is so cute. I just love it.

| It is to late to dock the puppy's tail now. It would be considered amputation at this point. Welcome and good luck with your new fur baby

Foir number 2" At that early age of eight wks it is still way to late to dock a tail. Leave it long; they are beautiful with long tails. Number 3" Coat will not get to start being long, until at least eight months old. It may take to after one year old to grow a coat to the floor. And even then you will need to provide excellent coat care to acheive this.

| Welcome. I'm glad you found YT. There are many here who have Yorkies with long tails. Actually in Europe it is against the law to dock the tail. It should not be done after the pup is 3 days old as the cartilage forms and becomes bone. If the dad is purebred but has no papers then it really means nothing except that you cannot register the pup. Since she is a pet Yorkie there is no need to register her anyway. Her fur will grow a little bit more every week. It takes time to get really long and most pet Yorkies don't get a coat that reaches the floor without a lot of work. Comb her everyday if she appears to need it or not so that she will be used to the grooming routine when she is older and really needs it. You will have trouble if you wait until the coat is long. |
