| What age did you start fixing their hair? Our new puppy, Hunny, is 12 weeks old. I started combing her hair when I fix Holly's. I want her to be used to it by the time she has a top knot. It took me months of persistance to get Holly to let me fix hers. She will just now sit and let me fix it with anticipation of a treat. As soon as I am finished, she begs for the treat. It's actually quite cute! So, to get on a routine, after I fixed Holly's each day, I will brush Hunny and comb around the top knot area to get her used to that. Well after only 3 days she has figured out that a treat is coming and she will not stop wiggling and crying while I'm combing her making it nearly impossible. Am I starting too young or do I just need to ignore it and keep working at it and not give her a treat until the end? |

| I was told to be persistent in the brushing and putting bows in their hair, plus do the same with clothing if you want her to wear clothes...I do it even though my prissy doesn't like it at all.

| I started with Cozy from the day I got her. I did her daughters' hair from the time they only had little tuffs of hair on their heads.

| Brody was 14 months old when I got him. He didn't seem like he was interested in being brushed and no top knot. I told DH to just wait...in a very few days, he will be begging to be brushed. I gave no treats for brushing, but brushed him a little bit several times a night, holding him and loving on him and after only a few days when he'd see me pick up the brush, he'd hop onto my lap all wiggly and happy waiting to be brushed. I started putting barrettes, bows and bands in his hair as soon as it was long enough. I developed a 'ritual' and he is now very used to it. He always gets loved on but no treats for top knots or brushing. Mia was 17 months old when I got her and when her hair was long enough...like about 1 inch......she got her first top knot...which she shook out almost immediately, but not before I got a couple pix. She gets a top knot every day and is very good letting me do it. I gave no treats for top knots, but always give lots of love for everything. I think consistency, patience, and perseverance make the difference...not age. For me, it is a matter-of-fact thing I do so they can see...and I believe they 'sense' that and respond in the matter-of-fact way they do. If they had been little puppies, I'd have started their top knots at the same time...when their hair was long enough. I made sure I was with them when they wore bows, bands, and barrettes at first, and only left them up a little while until they got used to them. I even would leave Brody's hair down while I was at work, putting it up only a few hours at night, and taking it down at bedtime, but I'd put it up first thing on weekend mornings until bedtime. I did that with Brody and Mia so they wouldn't think it was a chew toy, or eat them, and could get used to it gradually. Mia, at first, after we got her, would grab Brody by his top knot and drag him around, and pull his bands and bows out with her teeth and Brody'd take the 'chew toy' for himself. He'll still (mis)take the bows when they're loose as chew toys. Now, she doesn't mess with his top knot anymore...but I used to warn her that her turn to be 'cave-man' dragged by Brody was coming...although he never has...don't know if that encouraged her to stop, though. As they got used to them...the way they felt in their hair, the (little bit of) extra weight on their heads, they seemed to take it in stride. Now, it's just one little bitty part of their every day. Hunny is such a cutie! You will be able to tell when to start fixing her hair, but, since she's so adorable, make sure she gets to see how pretty she looks when you get her all fixed up, too!

| You should be working with her already if you want her to keep it in. I was not lucky enough to get Sadie use to them but she was already 7 months old when I got her. She will leave it in until Daddy gets home from work cause I tell her you have to leave it in till Daddy sees how pretty you are and when he comes through the door, she runs to him to show him the bow and he tells her how pretty she is and then tears it out lol.

| Oh, yes keep working with her. I don't give Gracie treats for grooming. I guess she figures being done with it is treat enough. You have to do it daily or they decide it is something they will be annoyed with. I didn't start doing Gracie's top until she was around 5 months old and she didn't like it a bit when I started putting stuff in her hair. I found that with doing it daily she accepted that it was part of the routine and just submitted after a few days. As someone already said, being consistent is the key. Puppies have a short attention span so you might want to just work with her for a very short time at first. |

| I ordered some from bowbizdogbows.com, and they look pretty amazing. My mom uses clips and scrunchies for human kids on her Rascal; she's too thrifty for a proper dog bow, lol. |

| Yes, bow biz is a great place to get bows. She has some helpful information available also. Remember that you need to use the little bands to secure the hair first and then place your bow. Dog Bows, Quality Dog Bows - Yorkie, Maltese, Shih Tzu - by BowBiz |
