| Hi Everyone! Newbie Here.. (: Hello everyone! I've been reading a lot of the threads and answers here and everyone seems so nice and helpful already. I can't wait to get to know all of you for myself! So, I've decided over some time that I wanted to get a Yorkie. I have been looking and looking to find the right one for me, and I've finally found her. She's not here yet, as I go to pick her up next Thursday, which would be January 19th. She's super cute and full of personality. Her name is Roxy! (: Anyways, I was just wondering if there were any important tips or top priority things I need to have ready for her before she gets here? I've been reading up on the collapsing trachea, hypoglycemia, and reverse sneezing so I'll be prepared in case any of these things do happen. And I've decided that I'm definitely going to crate train! So let me know if you all think that's a good choice... I've already been making her bows and I do have one of the plastic pet carrier crates as I've heard they can get their paws caught in the wire ones. I've even heard of some fracturing their little paws doing this! I can't imagine what I'd feel knowing I was responsible for my little one doing this. I also have her collar and I.D. tag already. You can tell, she's gonna' be spoiled as any puppy should be. (: I'm also only 17, but will be 18 in May! I'm gonna' need someone to stay with me when I leave home, so I'm sure Roxy will be perfect. Don't underestimate me though! I'm very responsible and hopefully with your guys' help, will be VERY prepared for my baby girl! So, let me know what you guys think! And any info or care tips are GREATLY appreciated. Thank you all so much! Kaelyn & Roxy (soon!) |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. Is your puppy going to be 12 weeks when taken home? Did your breeder health test the parents? Is there a health grantee? Have you seen the parents and where they are living? Hope you don't find my questions rude they are just some of the questions that can help you to make sure your breeder is a reputable breeder and make sure that you will have a healthy happy puppy. I wish I had know about reputable breeders when I got my pup so I try to tell everyone getting a puppy about them.

| Your questions don't seem rude at all! I appreciate them. She will be 8 weeks old whenever I get her.. But I've been told that is the right age to bring them home. I went to see her and her home and parents last Monday and everything was very clean and everyone there (puppies and adults) seemed very happy and healthy. I met her parents, which have been health tested and are beautiful. Roxy was very clean and happy whenever I seen her, her home was very suitable. Yes, she does have a health guarantee for one year I believe. I've also already put a deposit on her, so that she will be kept for me.

| She should be at least ten weeks when you bring her home, if they won't keep her until 12 weeks of age. Let her mother teach her things that you can't. Another thing you should consider is a savings account for any emergencies that may occur, besides the normal monthly costs of flea and tick meds as well as heartworm meds that are really not cheap. Consider a good quality food, brushes, combs, harness, and leash, as well as a good puppy shampoo.

| Welcome too YT ! You mentioned a collar & they are ok for holding their tags but a harness is best for walking your baby so her trachea is not damaged by her pulling when she walks. Lots here order the silk step in & seem to really love them. I just use the regular step in & I love them too. I also agree that you should see if the breeder will keep your pup till 10 wks, 12 is best but at least 10. Every wk that pup stays with Mom the better off you both will be. |

| Okay, I will definitely ask her about the 10 weeks thing. I've read a lot about having harnesses rather than collars, and I'm definitely going to get one. I'm going to keep the collar too, for holding the tags like you said. Thank you for mentioning the best type! The savings account is a great idea that had never even crossed my mind. Thanks! Thank you all for your tips! I'm getting really nervous about bringing her home and want to have everything ready for her and just what she needs. (:

| Welcome to YT! Did you talk to the breeder about waiting until your pup is 12 weeks old? I know you are excited and anxious (I've been there a few times myself! ), but this is not a time to put your wants first....it is a time to put the needs of your puppy first. Please don't think I'm being mean....I wish you the very best and want to see you and your little one get the very best start together. A truly reputable breeder would already know about the 12 week rule and would never consider letting their pups leave at 8 weeks.
