| my yorkie is not himself Hi everyone, I need help with my poor max. He is old around 14 and we have notice a big change in him in the last month. He is usually very active, playful, happy, loving, but now he seems to not recognize us. He has his good days when I come home from work he's jumping and shaking his tail and glad to see me but mostly when i get home he just looks at me and walks away. With my husband they were best friends now Max doesn't even acknowledge him at all. He also won't let us pet him.. He paces all night, he leaves when you enter the room he's in. He usually sleeps with us and sleeps long periods of time. Now he when i do see him sleeping it's in unusual places like the hard basement floor. Sometimes i wake up and check on him and he's just sitting there in our living room sitting and staring at the wall. Also at night while he is pacing he insist all the doors are open. He runs and pushes them open all night. Oh and he startles easily over nothing. He shakes a lot, but that he always kinda did. His appetite has not changed. The living space hasn't changed. Same people in the house. We still give him a snack pretty much everyday now like a hard boil egg or cottage cheese. No accidents in the house. He still tells us when he wants to go outside. He's still barking at the mailman, but everything else has changed..It's so sad it's like he's looking for something....(I'm not sure if this is important but he was a rescue, but that was 11 years ago) He's like a walking shell. Could this be dementia? Is there something I can give him for the anxiety without going to the vet an over-the-counter med? Please if anyone can help me or relate to this I really want to help him. |

| I don't know of anything OTC... there is a prescription drug your vet could give him... I'm sorry you and Max are going through this... Welcome to YT.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I don't have a lot of experience with this, but with my first silky, he lived a long life of 15 years and he did something similar by age 14, he still loved me every now and then but slept most of the time, and acted like a lil old man, he was not in pain, I gave him joint medicine and senior food, until the end, all you can do is make sure he is not in pain and love him .. hugs, |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My Nikki is estimated to be about 19 years old. He is mostly blind and deaf. He sleeps most of the time. He started about a year ago getting up at night and pacing and getting "lost" in the master bathroom of my bedroom. I have lights on all night for him but he still will use the ramp to get down and forget how to get back to bed. Lately he stares at nothing too. I would have him checked by your vet and see if he has any medical issues and discuss medicines like anipyrl for canine cognitive disorder which is like doggie alzheimer. It helped Nikki for awhile. Nikki still enjoys his food, has no accidents and appears to be in no pain. I hope you can get some help for Max.

| At his age there are a number of things that could be bothering him. He needs a good check up by the vet that includes blood work. He could have had a stroke, he could have arthritis and be in pain, he could have diabetes and that can effect his eye sight and his brain function. Of course at his age it is very possible he is having vision problems on top of everything else. He obviously is suffering and needs some help. Please get him to a good vet that knows how to deal with older dog's health issues. |

| My advice is a vet check first. My tentive opinion is leaning toward loss of hearing, loss of sight or maybe even dementia. My Noah began to do unusual things like staring at nothing when he was 17 but he was almost compleatly deaf by then and had lost much of his sight. The only way to be sure is to have him checked out.

| I would have him checked by your vet asap. He could have been losing his sight and his behavior sounds similar to that of a newly blinded dog. Best of luck and keep us updated!! |

| I agree he needs to see your vet but it sounds like dementia to me. Our little Tina is 14 and thats what we go through. We have finally had to put her in diapers and keep her safe in their doggie playpen. Its for her own good because she has gotten hurt a couple of times plus she forgets where she is. I take her outside and let her get some excercise but its hard because its like taking care of a little ole' lady. We love her so much and as long as she is not in pain I will give her the aniprl and her lasic and keep her as comfortable as possible. Good luck with your baby, I know how hard it is to see them go down. |

| It's so heartbreaking when these precious pups get older. Maybe Max is having difficulty seeing or hearing. I would have the vet take a look at him. Sending good thoughts to you. |
