My Nikki is estimated to be about 19 years old. He is mostly blind and deaf. He sleeps most of the time. He started about a year ago getting up at night and pacing and getting "lost" in the master bathroom of my bedroom. I have lights on all night for him but he still will use the ramp to get down and forget how to get back to bed. Lately he stares at nothing too. I would have him checked by your vet and see if he has any medical issues and discuss medicines like anipyrl for canine cognitive disorder which is like doggie alzheimer. It helped Nikki for awhile. Nikki still enjoys his food, has no accidents and appears to be in no pain. I hope you can get some help for Max.
