Has anyone ever heard of this breeder, Misty Irwin?

The United States Humane Society says the same thing. There are exceptions to every rule, but the idea is that a breeder should take every precaution to find a permanent home for their puppies, not just a temporary home. So getting to know the puppy buyer and evaluating their fitness as an owner of that breed is very important. Also, a breeder should make it clear that if you can’t keep the dog that the breeder will assist in the rehome. I know one breeder who says when selling to elderly people; he gets the grown children involved and lets them know that he will take the dog back if something happens. There are things that breeders and rescues can put in their contracts so that the animals cannot be resold.

However, this breeder must have had several litters because she didn't even know which one I was talking about even after I told her that the birthdate was 7/30/11. She asked me whose names were on the papers! She acted like she was bothered by the fact that I was asking how old her puppies are when they are adopted out ( 8 weeks, not a good sign ) and about the size of his parents. She didn't want to email me pictures either. She told me today that she's "going outta town for work" and to text her in a couple weeks. I will contact her again and ask for pics, but I'll probably never get any. Even if I do, they may not be Bear's real parents, who knows! I don't trust her even for a minute. She mixes breeds and has more puppies for sale right now. I hardly consider her a reputable breeder.

I have purchased two Yorkies from Misty, both have been healthy and obviously purebred pups. Yes, she does wean a little earlier than a lot of breeders and no you don't meet her, but that does not mean a thing. I know many breeders that do not want people coming to their homes. As for the 8 weeks, I got one pup from Misty at 6 weeks and another at 7. SOME people say to wean and sell at 12 weeks, but it does not hurt the puppy if he or she is no longer able to nurse.

She wasn't even willing to send me pictures of my dogs parents! She didn't even know what litter he was from. She made every excuse under the sun and then finally told me she didn't even have the mother anymore! She had several different breeds listed on multiple sites even!

You just listed 2 of the big red flags for the backyard breeder. Not meeting them and seeing EXACTLY the kind of conditions the dogs are being bred and raised in PLUS releasing pups while they are at their most vulnerable immune-wise.

A good breeder would certainly know who the purchased the puppy and be willing to provide pictures of the parents!

Haven't there been a few threads lately about dogs showing aggression because they are weaned too early. Puppies learn a lot from their mother and litter mates and when you wean them early like that, it can cause behavioral problems down the line.

If this lady has several different breeds of dogs listed on several different websites and she has no idea who the parents are of a 5 month old dog of hers AND she won't let people see her kennel...IMO, it sounds more like a puppy mill than a BYB.

I don't see an issue with the OP talking about her experience with the breeder. She's definitely got some legitimate concerns!!

You can always wean the dog on another lactating female if the mothers milk dries up or feed a supplemental I'm sure (breeders would know better than I), but they should stay for socialization until a minimum of 10 weeks completely dependant on size and health

I drove from WV to Tennessee to get him. He was seen by my vet the next day. I continued to contact Misty for several months for pictures of the parents, no luck!

The pup I bought from her over 3 years ago is the LEAST aggressive Yorkie I've ever had and I got her at 6 weeks. The Yorkie I got less than 3 years ago from a different breeder at 12 weeks is HIGHLY agressive. The puppy I JUST purchased from her on Sunday is exceptionally sweet. And guess what else? She didn't remember all the details of our first purchase either, and she was VERY interested in who would be around the pup and how old they were. I know many people who have purchased pups from Misty and I don't even think she offers any other breed of dog. And NO, just because someone doesn't want you to come to their home does not mean they are hiding something. I wouldn't want people coming to my house either. I do think Misty weans a tad early and all of her dogs are CKC, which I prefer because that means they haven't been inbred to hell and back like AKC dogs which cost 2 grand and are riddled with health problems when you can get a great female dog from Misty for $500.00. Also, my previous mail carrier is related to Misty, his name is Elliott and he is extremely nice. These are not bad people. Just because someone rescued a dog and never even spoke to Misty speaks volumes in the first place.
