YorkieTalk Newbie! | Hello I'm a newbie and I need help!!! I have 2 dogs and I love them. My oldest name is Pretty she is a Jack Russel Terrier mix and is about 5 years old. Our newest is Angel and is a full breed Yorkie. She's about 5 months old. We're having massive kennel issues. She is pretty well house broken. She doesn't like going into her kennel but does if you bring the kennel to her. We don't have to force her in. She goes all night and was able to go at least 5 hours in the kennel with no accidents. Now all the sudden she's peeing in her kennel every time she's in it. We have a standard extra small kennel for her and we can see that she has been scratching at it and it got so bad that she has hurt her nose. It's to the point that I don't want to leave the house but I have to work. Tonight I put her in the larger kennel because we were thinking it was the small kennel was the issue but nope it wasn't she was soaked from head to too and got a bath for the 2nd time today. I'm starting to get so mad at her and I know I can't punish her so I'm looking to you all for help! What is causing this??? I have no issues with Pretty and she kennel trained very easily. Any suggestions??? Just so you know how she came into our lives she was given to me by a coworker that breeds them. She knew we wanted a new puppy so with the last 2 litters they had they let us chose. They raise the new puppies in a large room that's sort of fenced off. They use kitty litter for the potty training area. They didn't sleep in the same area so that makes me think that she's not used to peeing and pooping were she sleeps. My coworker has 4 at home and none of them do this. We had been keeping her in the bathroom and she was doing awesomely but then she chewed the crap out of the wall so that's not an option. I know this is getting long so I'll leave it at that. Please help me!!!!!! |

| I think she's suffering from separation anxiety. I don't know how you will deal with it since you leave her. How many hours a day is she alone?

| Agreed. This totally sounds like separation anxiety.Try leaving a T.V. or radio on to keep her company if you don't already.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Have you heard of an xpen? Lot of us have found it helpful. It’s more like a play pen and they can’t chew the walls. Being in a small kennel all day long is not a good life for a dog. It's helpful when training, but you should let them out hourly and play with them and then back in the kennel. She's learned to pee in the kennel and that's not a good thing either. You may need to clean the kennel with an enzyme cleaner to remove all traces of urine smell. Also, it might be helpful to have some type of interactive toy that she’s not so bored all day. They have toys that you feel with kibble and the dog can roll the toy around and get pieces of food. I put a bed and food and water in Joey’s x pen and he had plenty of toys and things to chew on for teething. Of course he also had a pee pad in there. At night I put him in a kennel and let him out a couple time and placed him on a pee pad, and he got the idea pretty fast. The first 6 months they are teething so they need chewing toys. The hard nonedible ones are best if you won’t be home to supervise. Yorkies need a lot of human time, is there any way you can come home at lunch? I'm kind of dissapointed that your breeder didn't help you more with these important issues.

YorkieTalk Newbie! | thank you all for your information. She's has been home for longer periods of time then I would like but on a normal basis maybe at max 4 hours. I make sure she has something to chew on and to play with. We tried the potty pads but she just pees and then chews them up so we're not using them anymore. I fear that she has separation anxiety but I don't know what to do with that. Both my dogs are very attached to me. We leave the TV on when we're gone and our neighbors still say she is barking. I do want to get a different kennel, especially one that she can't chew on as easily. Any suggestions that won't break the bank? I would like to get a soft collapsible one but not sure what would be best for that. You're help is greatly appreciated please keep it coming. |

Mine are all potty pad trained.... BUT, keep in mind this is a puppy!! They chew!! They teeth!! I have had Venetian blinds gnawed, my oak dining room table legs chewed... And other stuff as well!!! It gets better!!! Babies do grow up!! Good luck!!

| Welcome! New here too, but I have had dogs all of my adult life! Can't be without them! I would use the xpen with a pad. If you can't come home at lunch you may want to look into a pet sitter who can come at least once while you are away. Good luck! |
