| How about calling her vet, or one in her area, and get estimates for the total cost she should expect to incur during the first year. At least three visits to the vet for the parvo series, distemper and rabies vaccinations as well as neutering and microchipping. Those last two may be considered "optional" by some people, but are especially important for a dog living out on a farm. Also factor in collar, id tag, bowls, bed, toys, chew toys, bully sticks, etc (since she has never had a dog she won't have any of that stuff). Next add in the cost of a year's worth of quality food and maybe one "extra" trip to the vet in case of an accident ( like getting kicked by the horse that doesn't like dogs). She also may want to have dew claws removed, if haven't already been done by the breeder, since the dog will be running in the fields. NOW, show her how much this "free" dog really going to cost her. And that is only the first year. And if the dog doesn't have any of the typical BYB problems - ear mites, a case of kennel cough already progress, fleas, worms, etc. |

| My friend has a german shepard beagle mix. Sweetest dog ever! From the SPCA here in my town. Her dog is outside almost all day, not in cold... but is SO well behaved. Great gaurd dog, comes when called BUT has the worst barking. She won't bark bad until she sees a dog. She has the german shep. tail, body but in beagle size and a beagle face. When she sees a dog, there is no going back. She pulls, she barks, she yelps. Gets overly excited. They have took her to trainers, no luck. Now since the owners haven't really done "come" in a while, she has totally lost it. And this was the hardest dog to train... EVER. I helped train since Bailey has the best to train. She caught on easy, and now knows so many tricks. This dog knows sit, stay, come, and down... OH and paw. Thats it. |

| I have worked with a few Beagles. They seemed smart and good natured. Their bark is huge for such a little dog. I thought they had a doggy smell and know they shed a lot. They are on my nose list , that means they live to sniff, and that makes them harder to leash train than the average doggy. They are also have 5 stars for prey drive (same as other hunting breeds). I hope they pay attention to what you have learned and really think it over. I know your intentions are the best, but sadly we can only suggest, advise, and teach, when someone listens.

| Yeah maybe I'll call her vet. I don't remember who her horse vet is but I know she's going to use the same clinic for the dog. I forgot about Dew claws, cause that's not something I had to think about. She also doesn't know much about micro chipping either. Will have to call her tonight and explain all that stuff to her. Oh she said they are "lilac" beagles, what does that mean?

| Well the battle has been lost. She told me just now, she is going to visit the puppies she isn't going to take the one that hides in the corner, and she isn't going to take the first one that jumps on her, she wants the middle one... that is playful but not needy and not too shy. I asked her about dew claws and those have been done already, she is taking it home at 8 weeks getting all its needles done and vet check. She doesn't know what it's going to be fed, she doesn't know how much needles cost, or spay/neuter, She also doesn't seem to care if her brand new white lazy boy couch gets hair or peed on. which I find that odd considering Harley isn't allowed on the furniture without there being a blanket down and he doesn't shed. Thanks for all your help everyone. She isn't getting it until Dec 30 I think, so we'll see how it turns out.
