4-5lb yorkie @ adult age...is that too small?

Just wondering is that too small for a yorkie? Should I be concerned if the father weighs 3 lbs and the mother 5lbs?

Kaos is two years old and is 4.5 lbs, 5 lbs on a fat day. he is perfectly healthy. What are you worried about exactly? I think he is the perfect size, and pretty sturdy.

Rosie is 5 1/2 lb. I think she is the perfect size! Not to small, not to big. I personally would never let a 5 lb Yorkie have pups but that is just me. I never wanted either of my girls to have pups. I agree with Kaos, what exactly are your concerns?

Someone told me that a yorkie that was closer to 7 lbs would be better than a smaller one...Health wise...I'm getting him from a very trusted friend who breeds them but I'm glad to know that I shouldn't be worried about it !!! Thank u and happy turkey day!!!!!

I don't think you can ever know for sure how much the pup will end up weighing as an adult. It really won't matter, as once you get one, you'll love it no matter how big or small he/she is. There has been some other threads on this topic - just search on the forum if you would like more info. My pup is 6 months old and weighs 5.5 lbs. When I first took him to the vet, he said he thought Brutus would end up weighing 7-8 lbs as an adult. I think he may end up a little bigger. His mom was about 8 lbs, and dad 4 lbs - however I have a Yorkie - Pom mix, so that may change things. Congrats on your soon to be baby!

Jack is 4.5 to 5.0 pounds and he thinks he is 40 - 50 pounds! I believe the AKC standard states: Weight: Must not exceed 7 pounds. So 4.5 to 5.0 pounds should be fine.

No, it does not. A 5 pound yorkie is a nice size - not small and not big. I have had them as small as 2 1/4 pounds and as big as 6ish pounds. The 2 1/4 pound one was just as healthy and spunky as my bigger one and actually was very bossy.
What people speek about is if you have one small like 2 ish pounds full grown adult, you have to ask why. Sometimes they are small due to genetics and nothing more and sometimes it could be a health issue. This is why it is important to have a thorough vet exam with health testing done when you get your pup. Very reputable breeders will have this done along with the blood test before handing them over to the new owner. I use to be a vet tech - vets cannot 100% guarantee tell if your pup is healthy just by looking at them for 5-10 min/typical 30 min. vet appointment. Blood work is the first thing you do, along with fecal checks, temperature, feel belly and joints, and check ears, heart, and lungs.

P.S. Breeders cannot guarantee adult weight of pups. You just have to wait and see.

My Lu is a yorkie/maltese and she is just under 3.5 lbs, her brother is just under 5.5 lbs. Genetics is a funny thing and two dogs from the very same litter working with the same genic mix can turn out to be different sizes. There is more size difference between a 3 lb dog and a 5 lb dog than one might initially think.

Lu is very healthy but I do think as others have mentioned that the reason behind the small size is a bigger issue than just the size. Lu is loads of fun and has all the personality and spunk of a larger dog but I will say that tiny dogs have their challenges and risks. Lu went through a faze a little while ago where she figured she could fly. Sometimes you have to be prepared to protect them from themselves! While that can certainly happen with an average sized dog, what could cause injuries like a broken leg to a little bit larger dog can result in life threatening injuries to a tiny dog. Tiny dogs do not understand they are tiny and why they can't do whatever pops into their little minds or follow a larger dog's example.

Lu is pretty sturdy considering her size. She jumps on and off the couch without any problems and yet she is tiny enough to crawl under our entertainment center and get a toy she rolled under there.

I think it is important to take into consideration that tiny dogs do not fit into everyone's lifestyle, so my counsel is not to fall for the cute factor and make sure that you realize some of the issues involved in having a tiny dog versus an average sized dog.

For me personally, yes, I prefer larger.

However that is within the current standard, which is up to 7 pounds for show.

My Cali is 3.14 to 4.2 pounds and heathly as a horse,as they say. It is all in the genetics. She she is small, but she doesn't think so - she thinks she is a big dog . Since we travel a lot and she is a great size for that. If she were bigger she would still be a great Yorkie! I think size is more important if you plan to breed. I did think she might be bigger when I for her but, shoot, it doesn't make any difference now!

That weight seems fine, my Chloe is 5 pounds and perfectly healthy. My Armani is 6 pounds and that 1 pound does make a difference somehow, he seems more sturdy and I worry about him less. But Chloe has no issues from her size and is a tough little cookie- si I wouldnt be concerned.
