Default After surgery questions

Ok I'm not really sure where to post this. Most of you know Callie had LP surgery on the 16th. Well I have some questions/need some opinions. First off she is drinking but she is only going pee once a day no matter how many times I take her out. Do I need to be worried about this or is it just she had a big bladder? Also she has yet to poop she didn't start eating really until yesterday when my dad was able to get her to eat some chicken and then last night I was able to get her to eat some of her dog food. Then this morning she had some dog food and this after noon she had some more. I am hand feeding her to get her to eat and shes not eating a lot but enough where I think she should be building a poop. When do I need to call the vet about her not pooping.

Anytime you have concerns no matter how smalll you think they are, it doesn't hurt to give the vet a call. With that being said, about a two weeks ago, Brandi had 4 teeth pulled and she didn't poop for like two days after she got home. If by the third day she hadn't poop, I was going to call the vet but she did manage to squeeze out a little something on the second day and by the the third day, her poop was back to normal. Hope that helps.

Taylor I don't have advice, I am just checking your post to make sure things are ok.
Personal exp. Rubin did not poo for 3 days after surg. My Vet said that was normal. I am sure some one on YT will answer, who knows more than me about this. Hugs for our Callie girl and Mommy too.

No pooping is normal. It could take several days. As long as she isn't straining to go, she will go when she has to. It's just the whole experience of surgery plus the day or fasting that threw her off.

The peeing, well, that is odd. How many times a day does she normally pee and how much water is she drinking compared to normal? If she is drinking much less water, then that would make sense. But then again, she does need to be drinking. What pain med is she on (asking because some can really throw them for a loop and they may be too out of it to eat/drink). Is she still in a lot of pain?

I don't think she is in a lot of pain shes not shaking, no panting and when she cries it normally is when she doesn't want to be in her pen and would rather be held. She has a pain patch on and she is taking tramadol twice a day and Previcox once a day. She not drinking as much as normal. I offer her water every time I am up doing something or if I see her licking her lips but before surgery she was would drink from a drinkwell water fountain and there is no way she is drinking as much as she was before surgery.

That's why she is only peeing once a day then. The question is - why is she underdrinking? Does she like her fountain and did it get taken away postop? If she is drinking so little that she only has had to pee once a day for the last three days, that would concern me a bit. She can dehydrate this way. Can you tell if her pee is light or dark?

I don't start to worry about no poop until 5+ days. Very normal.

She isn't drinking every time I offer her water and I am offering it a lot. Because of her staying in the play pen or on my lap I did pick up the fountain until shes better. I have water in her play pen all the time and shes moving around a bit but isn't drinking the water unless I physically offer it to her. Are there other symptoms of dehydration I need to look for? Anything I can do to make her want more water?

If you aren't offering her water from the fountain several times a day, I'd start. I'd put it back down just in case she wants it. If that's how she likes to drink, then maybe that's what she wants. Also though, if she is getting more canned or human food than normal, it is full of moisture, so her need for water will decrease.

Yes, watch for sticky/tacky gums.

I have seen a few pups have problems with the pain patches. They end up lethargic and don't eat and drink like they normally do. At this point, I wonder if she really needs it. Perhaps the Tramadol would be enough?? Doing both is quite a lot of medication for a little one.

She's on Previcox too!

I agree. She sounds very drugged up. Initially that is fine to keep her as pain free as possible. But if it is making her not want to drink, then you might want to talk to the surgeon about taking her off at least one of these drugs.

Missed that one! Yeah, she is on a lot of meds this far out. I have never seen oral meds given while they are wearing a patch.

I am supposed to pull the pain patch off tomorrow. She seems pretty uncomfortable today. My parents are coming down today and my dad is one of her favorite people so I am going to see if he can get her to eat and drink more. If no luck I will definitely call and see if I should just go ahead and pull it off. I was thinking of having my mom run to the store and get me some canned food because it has more water in it and she might eat it. Just not sure which brand to go with.

Have you also tried adding water to her dry food? Kaos doesn't do well on wet food but there are times where he doesn't drink at all, and I have to add water to his dry food to keep him hydrated.
