Phew...big subject...and a good one too . There are infinite reasons people really ask for advice, and unclear intentions too. Often times, people ask for advice knowing in their heart of hearts/gut they need the advice and should likely take much of it...but the barriers in the way of taking the advice can be significant. By barriers, I mean money, ignorance, attitude toward 'health care' of animals (how big of a real priority), fear, denial, approval seeking, control issues, having to be right, perception of advice given (the judgment aspect, causing defensiveness).

I really am taken aback at the extent of judgment I sometimes perceive here, to be frank. Being super harsh or arrogant in beliefs is so alienating! It does almost nothing for persuading the person to actually listen.

I've been guilty of being judgmental too...so it's something I'll hopefully work on the rest of my life. The older I get, the more important it's become to me in understanding the world, and humans. If I'm feeling like an asshat about something, I sometimes try to picture that person sitting across from me and thinking of how I'd respond in person.

That said, there is nothing wrong w/ saying "Please take your dog to the vet/ER immediately!" -- I'm just saying that sometimes, people go way too far in alienating someone...and in the end, it can potentially hurt the doggie even further.

That's my 2 cents, take it or leave it .
