| What can they not have? I was wondering what foods that Yorkies/Dogs can and can't have? I know its a bad to do this, but I give Bailey people food. And.... she loves it. So, since we have gotten into this litte habit with Bailey, I don't know what I can giver her or not. I dont want her to have a tummy ache. I know I can't give her chocolate, raisens. Thats about my extent of the knowledge I know on this subject. We have just recently started doing this because I cant resist that little baby face that she shows me. . Thanks! |

| It's good to be very aware of what is not good for them. It's easier to post a link, since the list of what is bad for them is longer than I could ever make: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...l-hotline.html

| Keep in mind that toxicity is not the only thing you need to be concerned about. Fatty foods can be a contributing factor to pancreatitis, which can smolder for a long time and then blow up. After an attack, dogs are usually at high risk for the remainder of their lives and must have their diets carefully monitored. Salt content is another concern. Also, long-term, weight may become a issue. Unnecessary weight is hard on Yorkie knees and other joints, and it is hard on their vital organs. Keep the treats very small and limited. Love that little face by doing what is right with her diet.

| I've been home cooking for my dogs for over 50 years. Dogs ate "real" food before dog food was invented, and back then, they had a lot longer life span. Now days, our companion animals are not so lucky, and they end up with cancers and other major health problems, due in fact to over inoculating, chemicals to put on them and in them to combat insects and heart worms, and commercial foods & treats. You keep right on feeding your baby real food. It's the safest and the most nutritious. Read these: Chinaroad Lowchens of Australia - Ticks, fleas, bees, flies, snakes and other gremlins! YT 1000 Club Member | The following book was highly recommended to me and since I read this I refuse to feed Romeo "dog" food. I paid $17 for the book and it sure was worth the price and reassured me that I am doing the right thing for my little man. "The Nature of Animal Healing, The Definitive Holistic Medicine Guide to Caring for Your Dog & Cat" by Martin Goldstein, D.V.M.

Also, people food was way healthier and way less filled with preservatives, etc, than it is now. I do agree with you on the dog kibble thing maybe not being the best option but I think it's better than just giving them people food without proper nutrients or balancing. Take it from someone who gave their dog everything under the sun and always had/has a pretty tough stomach. I guess one night it was just too much and he came down with pancreatitis in the hospital.... $1800 later... yeah lesson learned. The only people foods I share with him now are cheerios, baby gerbers puffs things, plain chicken, non buttered unsalted popcorn, etc. And all in little tiny bites (even for my 16lb'er). An easier list of items would be what they CAN have vs. what they CAN'T. I like this list: 10 ?People? Foods for Dogs | Modern Dog magazine - the best dog magazine ever

| One of the reasons it is not good to give a Yorkie people food is because they tend to think that people food is their food. I used to have a little Shih Tzu that always got the last bite of everything I ate. It never effected his eating habits. He always ate his food very well. When I got Gracie my vet warned me that they tend to get attached to people food and can be very picky eaters. Well, I didn't understand the concept of what she was saying. I would give her just a bit of what I was eating like I used to do with my other dog. Before I knew it she started demanding people food and refusing dog food. Even after I stopped giving her people food it took me months to get her to eat dog food. I cooked for her for several months but I do not feel comfortable giving her just food I have fixed for her so I finally found a food she would eat. She still gets mad when I won't give her any of my food. I think these little dogs can identify so closely with us that they think they should have whatever we have. She is my little shadow and does everything with me but for her own good I won't give her my food. She is quite small so I have to be careful about not giving her many treats either so she does not fill up on things that are not as good for her. |

| Oh, the food I give Gracie is all natural made from grass fed animals with no grain, sugar, hormones, antibiotics, steroids or by products. It's better food than I feed myself. I love this little baby and since she is so small I can afford to feed her the best. |

| Some people have very strong feelings about certain dog foods. Myself I think what we feed our dog is important. I use a balanced kibble Royal Canin Yorkshire 28. But it is not the bulk of their diet. I cook for my dogs. They get 1/8 cup kibble at the evening meal. Breakfast is oatmeal, steamed egg, veggies, boiled skinned turkey, chicken, lamb, white fish, or venison. Once in a while I will do beef liver or lean pulled pork. Once a week they get a 1/2 teaspoon of honey and 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil which is drizzled over steamed brown rice. I also feed them low fat cheese parmesan, yogurt, and cottage cheese. Around 3pm my babies get a Kong stuffed loosely with veggies, fruit or frozen yogurt, pure peanutbutter and cereal. Or piece of homemade jerky.

| Oh my gosh! Your dogs sure are spoiled! They get everything. Let me rephrase. I don't give her ALL MY FOOD. I made chicken noodle soup with veggies and chicken; she got that, peanut butter; occasionally when I'm in the mood for her to have some, if I'm cooking like chicken I will give her some of that, bacon; 1/4 of one everything we have bacon like 2 times per month, she loves cheese and those are her treats other than ceasers, but Bailey does it small as well so I can afford to get her Taste of the Wild which is $11 for a small. But she eats once at 6 am and again at 4-5 pm. Sometimes she isn't hungary and she doesn't get treats during the day because she sleeps from 6:50 am to 4 pm with 2 potty breaks at 11 and 2. She knows the exact time to go... Go potty, play for a min, back to sleep! I dOnt feed her everything even though she wants me to! |

| Bacon is not a good food to give a yorkie at all. It is salty, fatty, and pork.

| Ok. No more bacon... It's not a lot though, little piece. But if we don't give her a little piece she will not leave me alone, I gotta resist that little face! |
