My Bichon puppy was shipped to me (from California to Washington).

He was almost three months old and was sent on an airline that the breeder approved of. (She said there is a difference in the way different airlines handle pets.) We also waited an extra week to get a straight-through flight with no stops. If necessary, I would have been willing to drive to another airport a hundred miles or more away to get a straight-through flight.

She said her puppies (Bichons) were usually tail wagging, happy little pups when they were picked up at an airport.

My puppy came in a new large crate with a blanket, toy, water, and food. He had a vet's certificate saying that he was healthy and could handle a colder temperature for "X" number of hours.

But unlike most Bichons - mine is somewhat shy and fearful. When I picked him up at the airport, he was very frightened and shaking. So - he didn't like his plane ride at all, and it was also the first time he had ever been away from his mother and litter mates.

We got the little guy home and he was, indeed, a friendly, playful, happy little pup. He was none the worse for the plane ride, but he definitely did not enjoy it and was very happy to get back into the arms of a loving person.

I think breeders should do their best to sell their puppies locally or to people who can pick them up. However, this is sometimes difficult to do, and with the Internet -- people further away, are often willing and begging to get a puppy and give it a wonderful, loving home.

I am not against shipping, but it should be a last resort, and should be done with care.

although I am against shipping, I do agree that at least it should be a LAST RESORT, not like "oh, yes, of course we ship, no problem... etc".

They ranged in age from 4 - 6 months of age. I bought during the time when I knew the weather was a great temperature for flying as well as the breeders would only ship during good temperatures. I purchased this way only to improve my lines and to get show prospects. In each case I trusted the breeder and they had excellent reputations! I also made sure that the breeder contact me the minute she left my baby and I arrived early at the airport checking and rechecking on the arrival time. At the airport I had to show them my license to get my baby. They were excellent in all cases. I have also shipped my babies out, but was totally responsible and in each case they all arrived in top condition. I even would dash to the gate of the flight so I could see how my babies were getting on the plane and sit there until it left. In all cases they the planes left right after they pup was boarded. I do not like to ship only because I have heard of bad cases and I drive my hubby nuts running through the airport to watch the plane leave.
I believe that it is how the sender and receiver handle themselves in each case. Who would ever send them all together in one kennel? Crazy! Who would send a puppy in bad health out? I thought they had to have a health certificate in each case when a pup is going to fly. Who would not be there in time to pick up the pups when they arrived?
T.
I am in total aggreeance with this. i too have had a pup imported to me and everything went smoothly. i had her in my arms within 10 minutes of the flight arriving. she was clean, happy, and every time she had been offered water was documented on her carrier. i have also shipped a few pups to others in the u.s. it's a personal preference and if it is done with care and consideration i dont see WHY THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH ME.

But as you say...everyone has their own opinion....and they are surely entitled to that opinion....
The ANSWER to the money issue in long distance adoptions is the Puppy Escrow. I recommend this for the breeder and the Buyer because either can get taken advantage of and the fee is small in comparison to the peace of mind both parties get from having the security of an agreement in advance and a third impartial party handling the money.

There is a thread or two on here discussing Puppy Escrows in more detail or you can do an internet search to find a company who does it.

Well, thank you for trying to educate people who probably have read numerous horror stories about shady breeders and their practices. I understand that you have an opinion just like everyone here, however when you reply to someone's statement make sure they at least know have of what they are talking about!
No one have to make excuses especially to someone they don't know. Search this site, you will find that there are many threads about people sending money, not receiving their puppy, or receiving a sick one...You aren't the only person on this site with knowledge of these thing's. No one here is dumb..

I have to admit a certain bias to this question. In my opinion, there seems to be enough within driving distance breeders to enable a person who just wants a great pet to find one. However, after being on this site I have come to appreciate that there are needs and honestly, there is more than one breeder here that live across the US from me that I know I would get a terrific puppy from, so I would have to fly to get my puppy and fly back with her. That's a whole different set of circumstances to just the I'll ship anywhere without question group. People who truly care about any pet will either ensure a safe delivery or like me, would go get their pet.

Oh geeze......being "uneducated" is not the same as being DUMB. I don't think ANYONE has called anyone else DUMB!! Look everytime someone brings this subject up....there may be someone out there on the verge of sending their money....and being setup for heartache....in my humble opinion......it can not be said enough.....there's always someone willing to take someone's else money.....whether it be for pets or some other commodity.

I'm sure this was a scam. An ad on the Internet said that someone was willing to give away a free Yorkie. All you had to do to get it was send them the money for the shipping expenses.

Sure!!!!!!!

I wouldn't. I need to see up close what I'm paying for. I think it's too much stress on the poor puppy. There are some on here who have had very good experiences with shipping. But I would never do it.

I shipped my puppy. I paid extra so that he went in the cabin of the plane. He got laid over and spent the night with a stewardess. He was happy and healthy when he reached me the next day. He also was escorted out at the ticket counter because they wanted to pet him outside the crate. I have no problems with it when they are shipped like that.
My tinier puppy I drove to pick up, by the time I got her home she had been in a car travelling for over 26 hrs!! If she had less of a constitution then I think that could have been a tougher way to go. HOWEVER I would not consider shipping a tiny to be an option as they can go down so fast when stressed.
To make blanket statements about people not caring about the welfare of a pup has no place here, I loved my puppy sight unseen but shipping was the only way to go for us. If you use common sense and buy from a respectable breeder I do not think it is such a worry, they care about their babies too!!!

Well I think if the poster didn't want any opinions other than her own she should not have posted this in the first place!
And to ask people whats wrong with them just for stating their opinion???
You ask me the original poster here is the one with the problem.
