| Scared of TV My 3 1/2 year old yorkie is suddenly terrified of the tv. Our tv makes all sorts of pops and strange noises, then Sunday evening it made a noise three times in a row, and Bean started shaking like crazy. Now she's afraid to be in the living room! Even if the tv is off, she stares at it then runs under the bed. Any advise on how to get my lap dog out from under the bed and back in my lap? Three days with no improvement is really heartbreaking! |

| Have you tryed to lure her out with treats or things that she like (maybe a favorite toy)... then if she comes out don't take her in the living room... just comfort her (pick her up, hold her, you know what to do) in the room that she's in, and gradually move towards the living room. Do this as slowly as she wants you to (meaning if she tries to escape from your arms while you're taking her to the living room then take her back into the room she was in and continue comforting because she's scared she needs to feel safe and protected)... and whenever she atleast gets in the living room... praise her, tell her good girl, you can even give her a treat (so she can associate the living room with a good nice place where she gets treats instead of the place with the scary box)... gradually move her closer to the tv (as slowly as she wants you to go)... and praise every time she doesn't cowar from it... Now this may not happen over night, but its the only thing i can think of (associate the tv with praise and treats to get her to like it)... well its either that or get rid of the tv lol. Hope I helped and good luck!!!

I would also like to add that maybe it's better to get rid of the tv and get a new one if possible. If it makes funky sounds you don't want it to catch on fire or anything like that. I hope you can get Bean to not be afraid of the tv. Good luck.

| I agree it would be good to replace the TV if possible as it could be electrical problems or something dangerous. Ahis Mama gave you excellent advice. The best way to help your dog is quickly get on this with good and positive associations as she described and calm understanding on your part before she makes a big deal of this over time. You might sometimes turn on the radio or another sound system in the same room to mitigate some of the tv noise, even opening windows, etc., and then feed her treats as a reward when the tv noise happens. Make yourself stay calm and matter of fact and associate only really good things such as treats or a squeaky toy thrown across the floor when the tv noise happens. If you can get her distracted and playing through the noise with a treat when it happens, she should begin to react more positively to the noise/treat over time. It goes very slowly and there are setbacks so be prepared with plenty of positivity and patience. Also, get her involved in other behavioral modification training to boost her positive feelings about you as her leader, who will keep her safe and always have lots of fun training to do with her. Good luck.

| Thank you all! She is getting better. We are using treats and toys to encourage her in the room. The tv is only a year or so old but has always made strange noises, maybe it should go back! But my husband is an electrician and doesn't find any problems with it. |

| Good news that she is improving. Stay patient with her as fear is a hard thing to get behind a dog without infinite patience with them so they don't associate your posssible agitation with their fear and make things worse. If when they are fearful all they see is you very positive and patient, they won't escallate into a worse state and will begin to react favorably to your calmness.
