hahaha, when hot rod and maggie may were first going out for walks I swore that they would bump into everything and anything as they would be sniffing everything instead of watching where they were going. Ahi will get used to being outside one day. lol

I wanted to check up on the newfies mom yesterday but I was out of town and plan on going over a little later on today to see how she is. I am sure she is all of the above of what you said. I just hope she's not too cut up.

It's really difficult to have play dates especially with larger dogs because they're so unpredictable, and because of their size it's even more dangerous! I took Nilla to show her to my granny (who had been wanting to see her) when we were having a cookout, and they have a pretty good sized border collie that lives in their house. Nilla seems more attracted to the bigger dogs (perhaps because she has a big personality?), so she would try and play with this dog and carry on, and the big dog would just stand and wag her tail and act like she was kind of interested in playing as well. The larger dog went to lay down and Nilla put her front paws on her shoulder - area and was just standing there and sniffing her, and the dog got spooked and started making these AWFUL sounds and it looked like she jumped at Nilla, and all I could do was scream at her. I got Nilla very quickly, who was obviously scared, and she didn't feel wet anywhere like she had actually been bitten, but I made sure they were separated from thereafter because that freaked. me. out. I'm just glad Nilla wasn't hurt, but I was very disappointed that had happened. I know it can still happen with smaller dogs, but if we have any play dates with Nilla I think it will be with a smaller breed FOR SURE. Wouldn't want anything [else] to happen to my baby!

Thanks, we all are fine and a bit wiser after this event. Thankfully we can come away having learned a valuable lesson without paying a terrible price.

I had a poodle attack Remy once.. so I learned my lessons. But is strange to have people say a dog over 20lbs as a danger. I have a 26 lb shih tuz who is scared of everything and is so gentle with remy it is such a joy to watch. But I guess if he had a different personality he could do damage..idk.. he is just my sweet bailey

*sigh* the thing I am learning is you just don't know with dogs. They have their ways and I agree with most posters.. even a gentle large dog can hurt our little guys.

I don't see dogs as being a danger...it's more of the owners that I see this way. Dogs will are, for the most part, influenced by their environment and humans. If they are not taught, trained and treated with with respect and love, they will learn this and in turn act this way. Yes, there are some breeds that are bred for being aggressive (I guess) but again, if they are taught the differences then there is really no need to label them as such.

wow, I certainly can understand how you feel. Glad that you little Nilla was okay. It only takes a second. Hot Rod will do that to my neighbors yorkie sometimes--I think he is just telling her that he's had enough of her in his face. When she was a pup, she would always jump on him and want to play. He let her do it for awhile but then when he had enough (I suppose) he would make a growly, barky kind of noise and sorta lunge at her. She would back off and go bouncing off another direction. I guess this might just be their way of saying, "I'm done, leave me alone". (??) I can totally understand it's a whole lot more different and scary with larger dogs doing to our little babies however.

I remember one time when I had my other Yorkie, Kayla, I had her outside on leash to potty, and this large dog came running into our yard coming at her. I scooped her up in my arms so fast. That dog just kept circling me and barking. Finally, a man that saw what was happening came over and distracted the dog and got him out of my yard. I was terrified and I know Kayla was as well.

Wow, that was horrible! Thank goodness that man came over and helped you out and that you and your baby were not hurt. We have the one dog that I (and other neighbors) fear this. There were a couple of occasions that something like this took place. It's so sad that you can't even take your baby out safely in your own yard.

Thanks, I was watching her when we went out the next time. She has a 15 lb jack russell friend and Maggie was her old self with her. She did her belly crawl up to her and rolled over for Kenzie to sniff her. lol. They are best buds and I was so happy to see Maggie not shying away. I was worried that she would have been tainted against any dogs.

This is why I never let my dogs around large dogs, no matter how gentle they appear. When we are walking if I see people with their large dogs, I pick up my dogs and cross the street. I don't even want to be on the same sidewalk with them. I would never want to see my little dogs be in fear of some oversized monster.

Jackson has been around many well behaved large dogs who I know and trust but I would never take a chance around ones I don't know or ones who I saw were clearly misbehaving. I have met far many more aggressive "little monsters" than big. I will never understand why it's cute for a 10lb dog to be tugging, lunging at the end of a leash barking but if a 100lb dog is doing it... it's looked at as an evil monster. Both are either a matter of temperament problems, training issues, human issues, or a combination of all three. I for one hope to own a German Shepherd or a Mastiff one day.

I think that we are all in agreement that bigger dogs vs. little dogs is not a good combination. That being said, I have grown up with 2 shepherds while living with my sister and one, I would never have around another dog while the other I would not have had any problems with being around my 2 yorkies.

To each and everyone's own personal opinions on how they their dogs are raised as with their skin babies. I just like to keep an open mind and rather than grouping and labeling, I like feel each animal is an individual being.

I would love to one day have a lab puppy, which if I had yorkies, I would be extremely careful around because I know just how clumsy and active they can be. Each situation and animal is different as each of our opinions.

No one more right than another other.

When Carlo does pass, not sure if we will get another large Breed like Carlo, even though I would love one. I am getting older, and they take a ton of training and sociialization. A Large breed puppy could cause a lot of damamge in a short period of time. We are in a way fortunate that Carlo and Maxine grew up together with a lot of care and watching, and now Carlo has slowed down very much and pretty much ignores the boys.

Thats my story, and I am sticking too it. I will never come down on anyone who wants a large breed when they also have small breeds. I know it can work, but I also know the risks and rewards. Also, if some do not want their little guys around large breeds, I also understand that. My daughter will not come in with hers unless we put Carlo in the Laundry room. She is very afraid for her dog. Me, I am afraid for Carlo. To each their own.

there are 2 pomeranians in my neighborhood that I am told would win the battle against the younger newfie. I have heard him barking inside the house when we talk our walks. So you just never can tell just by breed.
